I am a K-9 handler and while in training I was told by the instructor that a dog that pees in the house is more likely to continue to pee due to the odr left behind, kinda triggers their brain and bladder into peeing again. He said that using a mix of 50% vinegar and 50% water and put it in a spray bottle and when the dog pees, take the mix and soak down the stain, then pour a liberal amount of salt on that, then put paper towels on top of the vinegar/water salt mix and place something heavy on it help the towels soak up the vinegar/water. He says it eliminates the odor and thus help the dog with housebreaking
I could have used that solution many times in the last ten years! Wish I had it sooner , I've acutually gone through replacing carpet padding just to avoid that problem and it's not easy or cheap!

One caveat, if you have natural stone floors like travertine, marble or limestone (as I do), the acid from the vinegar may eat away the stone and leave an "etching" of the cleaned area.
I use a 50/50 bleach solution and it seems to do the trick. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone has stone floors instead of carpet.
