I hope this finds all of you affected by Gustov doing well, and safe.
I have a question for those of you who have had to evacuate with your animals...
I live on the coast of S.Carolina near Charleston, on an island. Pretty sure we will end up being evacuated unless something major changes.
I'm trying to make lists of what I need to pack for the dogs, but also for my horse. (I've more or less got my stuff packed already for myself)
Anyone have suggestions on things that I may need to bring with me?
Haven't figured out where I'm going yet, but that is being worked on as well.
I'm hoping that maybe someone will mention something I have overlooked - I've got a bunch of stuff that was more or less ready to go with basics (food, water, medical records, ID, etc) BUT now that it is a real threat, I'm getting a little worried that I'm forgetting something.
I've never had to evacuate for a hurricane before, so any advice would be appreciated...

For the dogs:
food already frozen in individual daily bags, or dry food.
Water bowl/bucket.
Crates if there is room, otherwise tie-outs.
First aid kit.
Vet records/Rabies cert.
For the horse:
hay bales,
water bucket,
extra halter and lead rope,
a 20-30 ft picket rope/climbing rope so you can use available grass instead of hay,
a carabiner or very large snap to tie the lead rope onto which will then snap onto the overhead or ground picket line (attached to stationary objects at both ends) so that the horse can move the length of the picket line. (I'm doing this with a calf and a pony right now and it works very well.) Learn how to tie a bowline knot, it is very secure and it never tightens so you can always loosen it when you need to.
If your horse is not acclimated to grazing grass and picketing start doing it now for about 15-20 min a day.
Saddle and bridle for fuel saving transportation options.
Coggins and health papers.
For you (if you don't already have these):
A camp stove, pan and canned food, utensils, drinking cup.
Sleeping bag and tent in case hotels are full.
Camp chair.
Toilet paper and trash bags.
Paper towels, baby wipes.
Toiletry items.
Bring a full potable water container.
Lantern/flashlight
A couple good books

Depending on where you are going to stay, I think I would get dry food as keeping your frozen food might be hard to do.

Cameron,
Be sure to remember to take any prescription medications. If you are bringing crates (a good idea), you might want battery operated fans (extra batteries) and something to cover them for a more den like feel in a strange location. If you might need to change diet, some cans of plain pumpkin and a can opener for digestive problems.Bring your cell phone and charger. Then, put your cell phone number on their collars, paperwork etc. If they go astray for one reason or another, you can be contacted. If you have a friend or relative outside the affected area, you could add their phone number too. I am sure this topic has been covered in the past with good information. I believe one was during Katrina. You should do a search. Good luck!!

Mosquito spray and sunblock...(comes in handy after the storm, when you have no a/c or power and need to be outside to cool off!)

thank you everyone. Some great ideas there!
I think I have everything packed, and all reservations are made for the horses. I have a hotel room to go to if I need to get everyone out.
Half the houses where I live have been boarded up already, lost more being done today.
All dog stuff is packed up, and they are able to go with me to the hotel.
Trailers' been serviced, tires are good, lots of extra water already loaded up in the trailer.
Just waiting to find out if this was a real threat, or if I can start unpacking everything.
I hate waiting...

Hey Cameron,
I just sent you a PM in case you need a place to stay. Horses, dogs and humans are welcome!
Hopefully up here it will just get a little windy and some rain.
Hoping Hanna heads back out to sea!

YEah, the hurry up and wait game in those circumstances sucks! Well, actually, never have been in a hurricane, but I was in the preparation and stand by mode during the flood this summer. We did everything you are doing and the water only came up to a block away from here. BUT. An ounce of prep...you know. Glad to hear you are ready. We stayed ready about 10 days after too, as you never know with Mother Nature.
And Howard. Thinking of you too.
Prayers to all of you affected by this horrible chapter.
