Sorry if this has been covered but (once again :confused I can't find this in a search....
I have a dog that literally inhales his food. He bites up and swallows two or three mouthfulls, may chew twice on the next mouthful. By then, it's all gone.
He doesn't defend his food. I can stand right there and watch him or pick up the dish with no probs. He's always been fed in his own kennel separate from any other dogs.
He kinda lives life at full throttle. That's fine. I'd just like for him to slow down when he eats.
If you're feeding raw, I'd say feed bigger stuff (like half a chicken instead of a bunch of wings) so that he physically can't stuff it all in his mouth and has no choice but to chew it.
Buy a basketball.
Make sure the bowl is only slightly larger in diameter than the basketball.
When a dog has to eat around the ball, he slows down.
If he pushes the ball completely out of the bowl, applaud your dog's intelligence, and buy a bowling ball.
I believe Leerburg sells stainless steel bowls that look almost like a sombrero, which approximate the effect of the basketball, with the center raised portion.
For most dogs, those bowls do the trick, and slow them down nicely. I had to use them on all my Boxers, as they were all notorious chow hounds.
It worked for all of them, except my last one, Brandy, who just used her paw to flip the entire bowl over, and just ate off the floor.
Another option is to hand feed. It'll slow him/her down-only thing is it's time consuming and a pain in the butt, especially when you have other things that you need to do. Not a savory idea if you feed raw-unless you use gloves. *shrug* The other answers sound a lot better than mine
i've had good luck with horses and dogs simply by putting a big rock in their feed dish--almost like a bowling ball, but cheaper id you have rocks in your part of the country. or 2 mediumm sized rocks. they have to work a little harder to get to the food, slows them down.
my Dobie inhales his food if the rock isn't in his dish. i mean, REALLY...the rock helps!
