Ok bruiser was on 100% raw well in light of epenses and having a litter of puppys.
He is now back on kibble.
Parie I know raw is so much better but parie is good for him and cheaper.
All large dogs are on raw but he is on kibble with a raw meal every other night ni kibble in that meal.
Now my question even on raw he ate like the meal was running away or like he never ate before.
He is healthy looking and get vitamin e 200 mg and 2 squirts of fish oil a day.
He is 7 months old.
Feed 2 times a day.
On a sheduale.
He is on parie kibble. The lamp formulia.
Thanks in advance.
My question is is this normal or is he looking for nutrition.
He chews on sticks to.
And eats everything in sight.
He is 10.2 pounds and at a normal weight he get 1/2 cup of kibble a day 1/4 in morning same at night
All my dogs act like this meal is their last. They all eat Canidae kibble.
I always get a strange feeling when I see owners with a very fat dog, who try and feed the dog, but the dog "isn't very hungry" - well, because it's fat and doesn't need any more food. The owner then worries that their dog is going to starve and adds tempting gravy (yes, I've seen this), cooked meat, canned dog food, to entice the fat dog to eat when it is not hungry.
Now, when I see MY dogs, who are not fat, get very excited for their food, it tells me that I am not overfeeding them. Because an overfed dog is not excited about their food.
Now I did have one foster who LOVED his food, and I knew this would be a difficult dog to keep trim because he always acted starving. He convinced his new owners to overfeed him. (they had to put him on a diet).
So some dogs LOVE food and you have to watch because they will overeat (this is like 99% of Labs out there). Some dogs are smart about their food, unless their owner convinces them to eat anyway (a lot of poodle mixes seem to be in this category). And some dogs just aren't interested in food much (though I have never met a dog in this category).
I think Bruiser is in the first category. He just loves food.
LOL I will remember that one: "ate like the meal was running away"
It sounds like he is food motivated. I wouldn't worry that you aren't feeding him enough, in fact I'll bet if he WAS fat (which I know he isn't), he would still eat that way. His ribs/body structure will tell the truth, his "starving act" is lying.
I have 2 like that.
If you are concerned about a nutritional deficiency causing his desire to eat, you can ask a vet for a blood test (someone else might know more about what kind of test you can do), or do what I do and change their food brand or flavour every so often. Today I am switching from Canidae to Orijen kibble. I also use Innova and Go! kibbles. And use the different varieties within each brand (such as Orijen fish or Orijen chicken).
Since you are not feeding just one kind of food (high quality kibble and are also feeding raw) I would not really guess that he had a nutrition problem.
Stephanie, Ivan eats like this as well. When I first got him he was very underweight, and difficult to get eating. Now he eats like there is no tomorrow. He constantly scans the floors in case there is a scrap of something... he has scarfed down bell peppers before! He also drinks water like it will never be there again. I have to restrict his water intake because he will drink until he pukes, then drink some more.
Some dogs are just chow hounds. As long as he is healthy and there are no other issues, I wouldn't worry too much.
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
We did a iron and diabetic and a few other blood test about 1 1/2 months ago we just got the last test back all normal very healthy no worms got over his constant UTI finally to yeah.
I desided to try feeding him in the kitchen instead of his kennel no different.
So as everyone said he is like that.
Oh Parie has 5 different flavors of food.
Chicken
Beef
Salmon
Lamb
Venison
So he gets different protien and his raw is always rabbit pre made raw.
So he does get different protien sources. Everytime I buy a bag I buy a different flavor.
Oh and he will do anything for food.
In my new running field when we train I can call him from across the field if I have the treat bag on my hip I don't care what he is doing he comes. This dog would die if he could for a treat.
He is very food motivated. I got him to understand sit come stay lay paw and dead in all of 5 mintues each thing.
ON the agility field he will do anything for food. He will jump and size bar for food.
