I am super pumped because tomorrow afternoon, my husband and I are going to pick up the newest member of our family(pack)!
Unfortunately, we aren't getting another GSD like I had posted in the Czech GSD forum But we decided that for now we'll get a dog that doesn't have the high drives, that we'll eventually want once we have property outside of town(20 acres or so). Although the dog we will be getting is going to grow to be HUGE. We are getting a female Saint Bernard. My husband has always wanted one and I love big dogs. We will still work on getting our current GSD trained for tracking(hopefully SAR with local law enforcement) and possibly get her tracking downed game for hunters in the future. Will possibly train the Saint Bernard in tracking also. I don't know for sure, but I can't help but be excited. I will now, officially, have a zoo-type household-1 GSD, 1 Lab, 2 cats, a St. B puppy and my 2 and a half month old daughter... oh and a husband too! :P Just thought I'd share the news with ya'll.

Correction. The above should read: "1 GSD, 1 Lab, 2 cats, an elephant"...
You all have had a unique change of heart. A St. Bernard is not what I think of as the natural "next choice" to any dog. They are cool-looking dogs, a breed you don't often see, so prepare yourself to become an object of attention around town.
Congrats and I hope you post puppy pics. I can only imagine how cute a St. Bernard puppy is.

I love Saint Bernards and would have a house full of them today if I lived in a climate thas was kinder to them.
My parents bred them in the 70's and I had one for a companion pretty much my entire childhood.

Well, we picked up our new girl. She is so adorable. Only now, when I was just out in the garage(where we have her for now til my hubby gets up-just off night shift) and I found a small soft lump about the size ofthe tip of my finger down by her va-jay jay. I called the breeder and left a message. The vet is closed today-going to be taking her to get checked out tomorrow I think. My husband is going to be pissed when he wakes up and I tell him about it. I am pretty mad myself-stupid for not completely checking the puppy out this morning, but was too excited. The message I left for the breeder asked if she knew about the lump. maybe she didn't, but then again she might have-if she did there is going to be issues. Also, besides that, since I've never owned a Saint, do they normally have dew claws on their back paws? This sucks. Help.

All dogs are born with dew claws, which are usually removed when the pups are a few days old. Since you've got a call into the breeder, I'd ask why they weren't done.
The lump could be something as simple as a bug bite. Certainly, your vet should take a look at it tomorrow.

Talked to the breeder and she said that a week ago is when the pups had their check-up and shots and all the pups had a clean bill of health and were completely looked over and there was nothing at that time-they were even checked for hernias and things like that and nada.
I'll probably have the vet remove the dew claws-not tomorrow- but soon, before she gets too big.
Yeah Sarah, it's possible it's a bug bite. I'll be watching it today and then find out tomorrow just WTF it is.

Keleah, my pup also had a small soft lump on her lower abdomen; my vet thought it was a hernia but it turned out to be an enlarged node. It resolved on its own...

Do you have a name picked out? Pictures? Saving that for her official Bio? Must see cute puppy.
My friend had a St. Bernard. Baxter. Don't see them often, like was mentioned earlier, real head turners for sure! Happy training!

Correction, Sarah: All dogs do NOT have dewclaws on their rear legs. GSD, for example, do not. (I think you meant that all dogs are born with front dewclaws, which is true. SOME breeders remove these.)
Some breeds do and they are not removed if they are part of a breed standard. For example, the Beauceron is expected to have double rear dewclaws. (http://www.beauce.org/Standard.htm scroll to hindquarters). Great pyrenees are also expected to have rear dewclaws.
In some breeds (like the Catahoula) they may or may not be present. In that case they are usually (but not always) removed.
So I wouldn't worry about his hind dewclaws. I don't know if they are expected on a SB, but in either case your vet can remove them. It should be done as soon as possible before the bone and joints harden.
I second the notion for puppy pics!

I stand corrected. All the litters I saw (non-GSD) did have the rear dew claws so I made an assumption and statement based on that. Sorry guys.
