Well, we adopted a puppy. She's a lab mixed with some kind of hound (whippet, greyhound). 6 months old, about 25 lbs.
For those of you who were kind enough to assist me with my previous almost adopted pooch, Esperanza, thank you! Our puppy, Layla, is a sweetheart and 180 degrees different than our previous. She's relatively "shy" and low key.
I know I'll have questions and I hope the members here don't mind me asking them.
Question #1. Since Layla is very low key (so far) and I want to train her "correctly", should I use a prong collar on her? We've had her for two days and she _does_ want to bark. I want to correct that behavior pronto. Ideas?
I would agree about not using the prong for barking. I just say enough and once they are quiet, I will reward with a treat and verbal praise. If they are barking when I or guests are in the room we leave and do not come back into the room until they are quiet. You may be entering and leaving the room quite a bit at first but they eventually get the message.
thanks, as always. OK, I'll try the marker method sans prong. I've begun the extremely basic marker training as rec. by Ed and the site. That is, if she even looks at me she gets a "yes" and a marker, a litte treat.
