I have the 1900NCP with the probes that came on it. I'm having problems getting them to make contact, even when cinching the collar down as hard as I can. I know they need to be tight, but I can't get them to make contact even when this thing is definitely too tight. At least, it's intermittent.
What length probes are people using on their GSD's? He's not a long haired one like Kodie (I forget the owner of him, I just remember the dog's pic.
I see 3/4" probes and 1" probes. For now, I'm just going to get out the beard trimmer and set it at 1/2" in the area behind his ear. But, I don't want to have to do this all the time, so I need some probes.
It's how you put the collar on. My oldest who just passed had long thick hair and i never had to shave it or anything, even when i switched from contact points to the SCG-LMB (surface conductor grid system) adapter. I hold the box in my hand and kind of scrape it under the fur then hold it there, then clasp it using the other hand, the first hand still holding the box in place, works every time. I doubt your dog has more fur than Marek did ( a real furball) so it must be a fitting problem.

Good method, Al. I do a slight variation of that because I need 2 hands to attach my Cinch It collar. I also use the SCG-LMB. I was hesitant to recommend it since he was already experiencing some difficulty. I still do a little shaving.
How much better does the SCG work then the probes? It looks interesting, but none of the contacts really look like they would work very well with thick fur.
I'm assuming I still have to shave/trim, but it appears that with 6 contacts instead of 2 that there's just a greater chance that they will make contact.

I feel the biggest benefit is you don't need to rotate the receiver around on the neck if you are going to leave the collar on for extended periods.
I do very short training sessions multiple times a day. I can leave the collar on all day without rotating the probes if I want to. I also do a lot of off leash training from long distances. I feel comfortable knowing I have some control in the event of a SUPER distraction.
The manufacturer has a couple of more brags that you can investigate. Dogtra markets them.

I know, but they sell them and can provide you with any info you need. Call their 800#.
If you have a problem let me know and I will go dig out the manufactures phone number. I think the manufacturer also has a website. Dogtra can give it to you.
