hi,
i will have the opportunity in November to attend a 3-day seminar given by Bernard Flinks hosted by Hundesport!!
i just got the DVD Building Drive/Focus the other day and watched it. WOW. its great.
my puppy Jonah (who is still wearing his splint and doing ok w/it and as a side note--his injury to the growth plate is NOT to the long vertical bone/growth plate but the smaller/horizontal growth plate and so it will not affect his length of leg--Thank God!).
anyhow, my puppy will be 8.5 months at the time of the seminar.
i do not have the schedule of topics yet, but wondered what to expect?? any tips, advice or suggestions?
we will be in a hotel for 2 nights...this is in Albuquerque, BTW, if anyone is interested....
thx for all the help on these Forums!!!
For certain, go and learn from Bernhard as he is really great and you will learn a lot. Funny as hell in only the way that Germans can be.
You will be in total information overload as he will be showing and telling you things that will be way over your head. Just go and learn as much as you can and look at the way he trains all kinds of different dogs, you really cant go wrong and you will meet some new people in the sport.
I would recommend a notepad of some sort and maybe even a video camera. I have been to 3 of his seminars all have been great but find my self when I get home that I should have taken a notebook or something to just jot down little points. He's a great teacher a very (sometimes bruitally) honest person. He has a saying, if you do not want to hear the real honest answer to your question, don't ask.
Funny thing is I haven't learned after 3 times...always in a hurry to get on the road!
Thank you for the tips!! i am really excited about going.
my dog will be only 7 months at the time of the clinic. where do you think he should "be" as far as manners, training, behavior--?
does he work with each person/dog one at a time at the level the dog is at?
what can i expect to do there with a 7-month old? i have heard he does do a lot w/young dogs and is really good...
does he address anything about tracking or is he mainly obed and protection/drive/focus?
Brandon, were all three seminars you went to the same as far as topics/agenda covered?
thanks for all the info. i did hear he is brutally honest... esp with cocky owners, which i am definitely NOT. i just want to learn and not screw my puppy up! : P
Glad to hear you are attending the seminar!!!!
Of course i will be there since I am TD at NM Hundesport.
Don't over think the whole thing! At 7 months it drive building and socialization that matter out on the field. he will still be a baby but should be able to show the desire to make prey prey and not be afraid of using his mouth to do so.
Bernhard will usually do a theory class then get out on the field, he will work individually with attendees to the level their dog can work and is appropriate for their experience age and maturity.
but, the most important thing about this or any seminar is observation!! watch the work done with each handler/dog team and how Bernhard views the progression of the dogs in general. Focus on what everyone is doing and try to see the picture Bernhard is presenting of schutzhund sport.
I actually get much more from sitting there watching than working my dog/s. It is what I take away that matters more than what we do with my individual dog.
i am really looking fwd to it. i just want to get an idea of what to expect and be prepared for. i will definitely bring a few notepads!!!
will it be held at the normal place? (i asked JTS to plz pick up any flyer you might have and also an app this weekend. Jonah is still in a splint).
THANKS!!
