I have a intact male, Standard Poodle about 25" and 27 mos. He has an interesting history. I call him my ADHD boy. He is happy, energetic, intelligent but has such an incredibly short attention span! OMG He is very prey driven and also can detect almost magically where I put tht stuffed animal. I mean I will forget about it and days later he will be at my office stariing down a drawer or a shelf. Aside from that he is a ferocious fighter and instinctively knows things about bite that I used to TRY to train my GSD to know. I had him in conformtion showing and he is seriously pointed. I really don't like trying to keep him in hair because he would much rather play. I have been giving serious thought to starting him in schutzand or protection training. A JR attacked this normally friendly guy. He has never been dog aggressive, but, when the JR showed that he ws serious and didn't intend to quit, my SP showed him artfully that he would finish it. He instinctively got a death grip on the throat and shook him wildly over and over and would not release. I tried beating him with a broom and he was oblivious. I can't remember what I did to finally get them apart. I think that I grabbed him and kicked the JR like a football. The JR gave me some serious punctures on my thigh and I actually thought that he was a goner. My point is, has anyone ever heard of training a Poodle in these disciplines? He is intelligent, fearless, has a strong prey drive and well built; a very handsome guy. fter you get done laughing please, those of you with experience in this, tell me what you think.
Oodles of Poodles!!! You can never have just one! |

Standard Poodles are great dogs and a lot of fun. They are very people oriented and intelligent which makes them a ton of fun to train most any game. Can you elaborate on what you mean when you say he "instinctively knows things about bite that I used to TRY to train my GSD to know."? The dog fight with the JRT, very unfortunate, but I can't relate that to grip sport.
With regards to the show coat, we use to keep them in conditioning oil and bands which allows them to play like any other dog.
If you want to try schutzhund with him, why not? The issue may be trying to find a club that will accept him, not because people are snotty, but because they will need to know the dog can earn a title and that you are serious and will be able to devote the time and attention the sport requires.

Keeping him in bands and or oil has been a challenge to say the least because of his penchant for rough and tumble play and because he has an extremely coarse coat (think brillo) which mats by the minute. He is a blue. I can't tell you how serious or competitive we would be until we have been around it a while. I worked with my GSD years ago but he never had the drive. As for the bite, I was referring to the locked on dynamic and the fact that no distractiong would disuade him. Obviously he would have to learn to release, but, he was getting seriously beat on by me and kept steady in his grip without being frantic. Tht's the best that I can explin it. He seemed to have the poise and fight instinct of very trained dogs.

Any dog is welcome to try their paw at Schutzhund.
Find a club in the area and try it out!

i personally like a SP. thye certainly can be an intelligent useful dog in a number of ways.
but, did no-one other than me think the above quote seemed to indicate things eing a bit out of control on the owner's part? i can understand an "out-of-nowhere" attack by a JRT (!)causing some, shall we say, "consternation", but to say the SP "artfully" grabbed the JRT "by the throat"??
IDK, it just seems kinda wrong to me, on a # of levels. maybe it's just my own weirdness...

Me too. I was thinking along the same lines… Sounds like a whole bunch of issues, with the dog and with a handler that has pride in a POODLE that is “a ferocious fighter.”
I am the first person to advocate using off breeds in SCH, and if you can find a club that will train with your dog, go for it!!! But I have a lot of issues with the “why” behind this post…

I would have to agree.
doesn't sound like the right motives to get your dog started in SCH.
My dog would do damage to any dog if given the chance.
But Im certainly not proud of his aggression and I understand that he is dog aggressive. And I would never think to put him in SCH because of his aggression or because i thought he was tough.
I personally find it a stumbling block and would never allow him to get near enough to get his teeth into another dog never mind swing the other dog around, then post about it like it was a "good" thing.
You were obviously close enough to see that something was going to happen (just from the way you were describing the actions your dog took)so im sure you could've prevented it.
i don't think i've ever seen a post on here where someone is proud of their dog attacking a smaller dog.
regardless of wether or not the JR started it, YOU should've finished it, not your dog.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |
