should i be worried? nebekenezzer turns 6 months old tomorrow, according to the birth date provided by the rescue, which should be fairly accurate as they were either pulled by a shelter in the states from a byb immediately after birth or born in the shelter. plus i first saw him when he would have been approx. 3 weeks old. so i think his age is pretty accurate.
anyways, he hasn't started teething yet. ....i check his mouth daily. he chews a lot, b/c i tug w/him for drive building, but his teeth haven't started falling out, there isn't redness, or anything.
the vet insists he's about a month younger than his listed age. but like i said, i think it's accurate.
should i be worried? isn't the teething time 4-6 months? or do you think that the rescue was wrong about his age? where are his adult teeth?!

Is this dog raw fed? If so, he won't have as much redness and irritation as a kibble fed pup that's teething. I never found most of Maggie's teeth. A few fell out while playing tug with a cotton rope toy, but most just went mysteriously missing. There was a little blood right when the tooth fell out, but the gums looked healthy during the whole teething process.
Unless he seems to have discomfort while chewing, I wouldn't worry.

thanks. i've just been waiting for 2 months for him to teethe and am starting to wonder when on earth it's going to happen.
then i start to worry he's really younger than he is, which bothers me b/c i thought the rescue vaccinated (his first and only vaccine to date) and removed him from his mother WAY too early (6 weeks) (they also called me and had me take him early b/c the foster home had intaked more puppies and didn't have time for him anymore. i had understood that he would be w/mom until 8 weeks, so wasn't very happy) - but if he was actually younger than 6 weeks, well then - obviously he survived, but that possibility kind of really bothers me.
he's fed mostly THK and grain-free kibble (either orijen puppy or wellness core). he does get some raw, but for a variety of reasons, i'm trying to economize, while still giving the dogs high-quality food - i mean, i don't want to give a growing puppy crap, and luc needs proper nutrition for our runs, and teagan has HD, so blah blah blah. not sure it actually is more economical, but it's what i've been going with.
he's still got all his teeth, that i can see. how old was maggie when she started teething?
....never thought i'd be waiting impatiently for teething, but i am!

Maggie was around 5 months. But I think it varies some by the breed/genetics.

If he's 6 months old he'd be right about done teething. You may have "missed" it! Baby teeth are small sharp "thorns" and adult teeth look like dog teeth. Don't judge by how many teeth he has, look at what kinds there are. Also note that teeth will "appear" and then still be growing for quite a while from the gums.
I wouldn't guess he was younger, I'd almost be inclined to guess he was OLDER than the shelter said, but that doesn't make much sense either if you KNOW you had him as a baby puppy... Nah, I think you just missed it.

i'd think i missed it too except i've been checking his mouth daily for 2 months now....so....geez, if i missed him teething while doing that, ouch
i suppose it might be possible - i was gone for 8 days last week - that he teethed while i was gone and the adult teeth aren't fully in so they still look like his old puppy teeth? i'll look tonight with that in mind. can they teeth that quickly?

Maggie took several weeks to teeth. I didn't notice besides the teeth I found, and the occasional blood on her rope toy. I didn't look in her mouth daily, but I couldn't really tell after a couple days where the tooth I found had come from.

Well, teething is a lengthy process (ask anyone with a WORKING puppy they're anxious to get on a sleeve/suit!) but sometimes the replacement tooth comes in so quickly that by the time the baby tooth is popped out, a new one is in its place. Have a close look... If his teeth look bigger and more "rounded" and less needle-like, they're his big boy teeth.

still puppy teeth.
BUT....he was really squirrelly about me looking at his teeth tonight, so i'm hopeful. our FR trainer is away for a few weeks so it's a good time.
i stupidly played 'got your tummy' with him til he was all keyed up tonight, so i ended up getting a good view of all his teeth :heh: as well as getting to feel them all.... we had to stop since it's my bf's reunion tomorrow and i don't want to look like a cutter or something, since i'm hoping he'll be able to some networking.

Jen, reading your two most recent posts made me smile.
One has Neb starting to mouth/chew on folks, and the other questions whether Neb will ever begin to teeth.
I think you have your answer.
Ah, the joys of puppyhood.
