I could not find a forum for kibble feeding, so I hope it's OK to put it here.
I had been feeding my four dogs Canidae for quite some time. In August, I suddenly I opened a new bag of food and the kibbles looked different. Not thinking much of it, I fed it to my dogs. They got diarrhea/loose stools for the entire duration of the bag (2 weeks). I switched them to Orijen immediately and the stools are great now.

Some people on this board were discussing that this was a formula change and that Canidae was now being produced by Diamond. (We do not have Diamond dog food in Canada, so I am not sure exactly what that means, but I do know it is not a superior dog food).

Canidae thinks it has "alerted customers" by "Changing the packaging" - I kept the old package and the new package of Canidae and I cannot find any difference. I am very upset by this and wonder if anyone has had any similar problems.

I did find this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/canidae.html which seems to confirm my experience.

I wonder if in light of this, Leerburg should keep Canidae dog food on its list of recommended all-natural kibbles. (http://leerburg.com/all-natural%20kibble.htm)

Oh great! My husband just purchased a 35 lb bag of Canidae this afternoon. Both dogs have gone thru a similar bag (the new formula) with no ill effects (however, the Canidae snap-biscuits seemed to give Nickie diarrhea - think he was being given too many a day). We haven't opened the new bag yet so may decide to take it back after he reads these comments.

Same thing with me, had fed Canidae for months than just like that, diarhea with the dogs, the person at the feed store told me of the change in production to Diamond, I have since switched to Taste of the Wild and they are back to normal again.

One of my other discussion groups had always recommended Canidae before the formula change. Some folks went through the formula change ok. Canidae replaced rice with a multi grain formula, but mostly kept the meat the same. However, some ingredients are locally sourced, and it seems some plants are turning out bad food now. It may depend on where in the country you buy the food as to if it's a problem or not.
If you take the lot number off the bag that caused problems and call Canidae, they are pretty good about responding to complaints, but I know at least one person tried a couple different lot numbers and still had problems with the food.

I hear Chicken Soup changed formulas not long afterwards, that was the second pick in that group.

Well, I filled in their website form, and basically said how disappointed I was and that I would not be purchasing Canidae again.
I now feed grain-free Orijen and the dogs love it, and I like the results. |

				hi,
after reading all this i called my food supplier (i feed Canidae ALS) and he said that the quality DID go down for $ reasons, but that they were coming out with a grain-free version, not out yet but on the way. he also said, that ALS (all life stages) was changed the *least* of the varieties they have. it is VERY disappointing, since it was the most reasonably priced decent kibble.....

I know Canidae has changed its processing plants to Diamond, which I've seen mentioned is not the best. Can someone please explain to me, what are some of the problems with Diamond dog food/processing.

Type this at Google:
Diamond dog food recalls
Among Diamond recall causes were aflatoxin as well as (later) melamine contamination.

If you are looking for another kibble to feed, I think that Evo and Orijen are similarly priced to Canidae. They might be a bit more expensive, but not much.
