i'm looking for a gsd female, i have decided to start breeding, however finding a good foundation bitch is'nt easy.
i've spent three weeks visiting breeders and am suprised at the poor quality i've seen so far.but maybe i'm being too critical.
when i inspect a bitch i look at length, stucture and gait, colour is also imprtant to me,but what else should i be looking at?
the dogs i look at is around a 1 year old.

Hi Yusuf, you can't be too critical IMHO. The correct GSD temperment is extremely important also. Are you looking at dogs that have been titled in Schutzhund? Even that isn't a guarantee, but it's a start. I know how hard it is to find good quality shepherds here in Canada, and good breeders. I'm glad you are fussy, after all breeders should breed to improve the breed.
All the best in your search.

i agree that temperant plays a big part, so if i go check a dog out, and call it or aproach it, and it acts too shy or nervous, it already raises a big concern.
my decision to start breeding is purely out of the love for the breed

I'm sorry Yusuf,
If you don't know what you're looking for in a pairing, you've got no business breeding dogs.
Just My Humble Opinion.

Okay Yusuf,
Obviously I or anyone else can't stop you from doing as you see fit. And you're right, everyone has to start somewhere if one is to go into breeding.
So you have help, well that is a step in the right direction; is it another breeder? A successful breeder.....not a breeder that can sell pups out of the back yard, but one that has titles and service duty seen by his dogs.
Maybe instead you're looking for show dogs and from the discription you gave for your search, it certainly sounds like that. The same questions apply.
But I suspect the answer is no to all of the above.
Yusuf, I think anyone wanting to get into breeding would know more about dogs than, "why does my dog want to mount other dogs all the time". The best breeders know dogs inside out and have a life time of experience to bring to the table.....then they start studying to breed. I'm sorry to be so tactless in this, but your basic ignorance about even the most elementary behaviors in dogs tells me you should be thinking of something else about dogs other than breeding.
I don't breed nor do I ever expect to, from what little I know about it though; it seems more like rocket science to me. A whole lot of studying, a good helping of elbow grease, cross your fingers for luck, blast off, and then watch what you've wrought. For good or bad.
Hey, that sounds like fun! Anyone help please, I'm going to build a rocketship, now I know I'm looking for a fuselage, a BIG one. I remember a little calculus, and I'm thinking maybe 2 possibly three engines, and I'm sure I want some fins too. Oh yeah I have the high school science teacher from next door to help me.
Should I be thinking of anything else?

He's from South Africa. At least he is on here asking for advice before he's breeding, which is more than alot of breeders do.
Yusuf, I'm glad you are taking your dog to a schutzhund club. The more experienced trainers there will tell you if he is breeding material or not.
Before you buy a female,(or breed your male) it's critical to make sure her breeder has her (if she's old enough) and her parents hips checked for hip dysplasia, along with other diseases or complications that German Shepherds commonly may have, such as E.P.I. (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency); Degenerative Myelopathy etc.)
It would be horrible to buy a pup with health problems, and more horrible to sell one!
All the best in your quest Yusuf, it's a tough one.

Yep, and I've given what help I could. Like it or not it's good advice.....No matter country of origin.
No help with my rocketship?
