In my search to replace my best friend, Tasha, I came across a 3 year old that a breeder in OH has for sale. He was keeping her for police dog training but says that she lacks the drive that he is looking for. Looking at her pedigree, I can see why he kept her. Now she is for sale and I have been in contact with the breeder. This dog caught my eye because she looks quite similiar to Tasha. BTW, Tasha is 4 and living with the ex .
I know you all have helped me with my doubts of an adult dog, so I come here once again. Anyway, this dog has been in a kennel most of her life. Breeder says she is very social and good temperment. Should I be concerned that this dog is a kennel dog? The fact that she lacks the drive he is looking for is not an issue at all, I doubt many dogs have this level of drive. What about becoming the pack leader with her?
I am looking for a family dog. Tasha was my big baby, but very obediant.
Anything I am missing? Any thoughts? You have all been great.

Hi Kacey,
I recently(1 week ago) brought home a 2 1/2 year old that had been a kennel dog, and it was the best decision I have ever made.
I don't have a lot of dog experience, so for me it was essential that I trust the breeder 100% to decide if the dog was right for me or not.
I also spent 2 days at the breeder's walking and getting to know the dog(he lived in a crate in my car during that time).
I am introducing him to our way of life using the Pack Structure video and articles- all the info you need is on this website.
Hope this helps, good luck to you in your search!

Yes, i agrree with Sarah. i too purchased a "kennel" dog. IMO it doesn't matter, just as long as you evaulate the dog well and like what you see. Fortunately for me this was the case. Like an instant connection. I knew this dog was for me and regret nothing about getting him. He has been a total joy!
Below: My "Kennel" dog
He was 10 months when i got him - he is now 1.5 yrs old and has started in advanced obedience and protection work which seems to come natural to him. No history on him what so ever. The guy i received him from said that a family paid "top dollar" for him and then decided to get rid of him after he had got more larger in size. Pack structure issues i beleive. He said that THEY said they didn't get him registered. For whatever reason, i have no idea. He gave me the family's contact number but it is out of service. So i guess im out of luck as far as knowing about his pedigree.
Good luck on your hunt!
Jason

Well, I picked her up Friday. Took 7 hours to reach the kennel, but I am glad I did. She is a very sweet girl. She does not leave my side if she is not in her "crate" which she loves. I did not hear her make a noise until Sunday when on a walk, some dog was acting aggressive so she returned the threat with a rather scary bark. She is aloof to dogs except when they act aggressive towards her.
I have been reading Ed's articles and have several of his training DVD's. Should be a good time training her.
Here is a picture of her in my shop. I tell my friends she is my new security system.

Congratulations! She's beautiful (what a face!).
Your shop isn't bad, either<g>.
Don't forget to come back and tell stories about how her training is going...

It is definately different with this dog than Tasha was. I got Tasha as a 8 week old pup. Misty is almost 3 now and has lived in a kennel all her life. She is cautious around the house, not crazy for the television and stairs. Everyday I she is gaining confidence. She is picking up basic commands (sit, down, and come). I don't use come too much because she is always by my side. I do like her by me, she seems very loyal. She has already taken me as her pack leader, but we will continue the crating and such for awhile. Last night she had free roam of the house, with my supervision. We walked through the house so she could sniff everything out. I usually leave a 6ft leash on her when she is in the house, but it is not very necessary as she is right next to me. The look she gives when she looks up at me is what sold me on her. She is a sweetie.

All my rescue dogs were outside/kennel dogs. Some adjust quicker than others. You've only had her a few days and it sounds like she is doing great.
She will get used to the TV, stairs, fridge, toilet flushing, etc in no time. I would just distract my dogs, for example, have a quick upbeat obedience session with the TV on.
If she is toy motivated you can play tug in the house (a short session) or give her a bully stick to chew. The more good things that happen indoors the quicker she will adjust.
I had one dog who was TERRIFIED of the things in the house. When the fridge would come on, he would run to his crate peeing. Forget running the dishwasher, flushing the toilet, or even running water in the sink. This was two years ago. I had him 11 months, then he was adopted for a while and returned, so I have had him about a total of 18 months. You would NEVER know now that this dog was ever afraid. He loves the house and sleeps right through shoot em up movies, and is even fine with the vacuum and blender.
Racing greyhounds go through an adjustment period when they go to pet homes, too.
Your dog sounds like she is doing very very well. And you are handling it great. Soon you will not be able to tell she was ever anything but a house dog.

Hi, Kacey,
Could you please make that photo much smaller or link us to a free Photobucket-
type account instead?
Just a reminder to us all that two photos are allowed in the member "Bio" and one for a
remembrance of a dog who has died. Otherwise, please link us to photos rather than
posting the actual photos here. THANKS!
