Good grief! If I have to talk one more person out of breeding their dog I'm going to explode! What is it that makes dog owners think that because their dog is: cute, tiny, huge, ugly, smart, stupid, lovable, whiney, tough, stupid, drooly, long-haired, short-haired, or mutt; they should breed it? It seems I've encountered them one after another this week. Just a few minutes ago I spoke with a gentleman who had his dog neutered...sort of. The $1500+ dog was crypt orchid and so the inguinal testicle was removed, and the other one stayed. On top of that he's showing signs of hip problems, and he is quite timid. On the positive side he is a good looking long-haired GSD, but why breed bad genes? Earlier this week I got a call asking if I knew anyone who would want to breed their dog to a chihuahua mix! WTH?! Just needed to vent!

My all-time favorite reason is:
"I want my kids to experience the miracle of birth."
Oh yeah? Well, make sure you trot them down to the local shelter so they can experience the harsh reality of an unwanted dog being put to death. Sheesh!

When my puppy was five months old a lady said she had a two year old female GSD and they would be great together. What?!!! And just two weeks a man asked me if I wanted to breed my dog with his. I don't know you nor your dog. I should just tell them he only has one testicle but according to the OP they probably wouldn't care. It's so annoying.

The last time I heard "the miracle of birth" excuse for dog-breeding, I made sure to go into great detail about some of the nastier things that can go wrong with a breeding (stillborn or mummified pups, emergency c-sections, etc), to a horrified audience. I did so because the family considering the breeding were ignorant SOB's who wouldn't listen and had the support and encouragement of several more of same.
MY excuse was that if they were doing it so their kids and all of the other neighborhood children were to "share this beautiful, natural experience", then they should be prepared for the reality of it, and not surprised by it. This is usually a deterrent.
Whenever we've had somebody asking if they could breed with one of our dogs, We didn't get cranky. We just give them the very lengthy list of requirements, along with the cost of the stud fee and that usually sent all but the most legit on their way.

Yeah, I guess the "stud fee" is a great deterrant, I'll have to remember that one...

I could not agree with you more. I can't believe the number of people that have asked me why I wasn't going to breed my female.
I just say that "I leave that to the professionals" because that is what breeders are and should be.
There are far too many out there that seem to think that they know something about dogs, therefore, they can be breeders.
That is like me saying I think I will go perform surgery but not have license to practice medicine.
That is precisely why I won't just go buy my pets from just anybody or kennel. I want to know that this is a pro who has years of experience and the list of credentials to prove it.

Makes me totally nuts, too.
The last one that really frosted me was a guy who had some kind of lap dog mix, and was looking for a purebred female pup online to use for breeding with him.
IMO so far, these folks just don't listen to reason.
Sheesh...

Uggh.
I've had the same person, twice ask me to breed my female to her male.
The male is a very good looking sable, and very affectionate.
He also has absolutely no drive. He will lay down and take a nap during bitework (I am not joking).
Luckily, I can just politely mention that I purchased my pup on limited registration and agreed in writing not to breed her (which is true).
