All,
I have an 8-wk old Dobe who had his ears cropped a week ago. They've lost their tenderness now to the point where he doesn't whine when I put on the antibiotic ointment and when I clean out his ears.
But. He can't walk more than two steps without trying to scratch. He walks with a hunchback in more of a lope than a walk; almost like a rabbit hopping on both back legs. And he shakes his head every three seconds like clockwork. He's done this very consistantly.
However, he never does any scratching or shaking while he's laying down. My fear is that something is in his inner ear; maybe some of the glue they used in posting, etc. He doesn't play, he isn't interested in anything. He will just try to walk or make an attempt at play, then shakes his head, sits and whines. It's only been a week, am I just freaking out for nothing?

are his ears scabbing over?
Scabs are itchy.
When the scabs fall off, he'll be a lot more comfortable.
Hopefully someone that has experience with this will comment.

Take your pup back to the vet and have them examine his ears...(I don't have any experience w/ this... just what I would do if it were my pup)

Yeah, they're scabbing up pretty good. I try to rub them off with the antibiotic and that seems to be working. He JUST had a vet visit this monday for his new puppy checkup; but the vet didn't scope his ears.

It's not normal for a pup to experience much more than itchiness after a crop, but being itchy is normal as it heals. Using the ointment to gently remove the scabs is the right way to go. Even so, he should be romping around and full of energy at this point. Sounds like he had the crop done a couple of weeks earlier than is usual too.
I would take this little guy to the vet and explain exactly what's going on, and make sure there is no inner-ear problem and nothing inside the ear itself.

I agree w/Kristel. Take him back to the vet and let them know. It may be he is just a few weeks young for this, or who knows? I had my Boxer cropped at 12 weeks. She was groggy the day I got her back, but the next day she was running around like a happy puppy - with bandages on. She did do a lot of scratching when they began to scab. I rubbed ointment on there to help. She was in bandages for about 2-3 weeks, with some days not having any bandages at all.

I have an app't with the vet scheduled for Monday. He's shown quite a bit of improvement though. He can play and run around, but still shakes his head every now and then. Thanks for all the replies. He's being raised as a protection dog, so I'll be seeing y'all on this board more often!

Hi Rey,
I have one of the pups from this same litter also. I train with David. The situation you are describing is normal. My pup Trys to scratch alot also. I`m sure it is quite uncomfortable for several days after surgery.
Use neosporin on his ears several times a day and he will be fine.
It is not to early for an ear crop. I have had several dobes and 8 weeks or so is when they were all done.
How is he doing otherwise? Crate training, eating, etc?
You will find this board very useful in the future. Ask a question about anything dog and you will get many spot on replys.

Hi there Lee! Thanks for the reply. He seems to be perking up ok. Last night when I was doing his ears I noticed a long strand at the end of the stitch, down at the base of his ear where they removed that piece(I forgot what David called it). Well it had angled down and was digging right into the poor little guy's ear. I could see the raw spot. So with some scissors and tweezers we got it out of there. He's a little chewing terror now, it's great!
Crate training was rough, I ain't gonna lie. I'm gonna post up a comment on David's site here shortly. =) I can't wait to hear all about your little guy (gal?). I'm gonna move over to the Protection Breeds - Doberman forum. Don't wanna go too off topic. =)

Rey
I`m not quite sure what you mean, what was it that you cut off?
Glad it worked out though. When you picked up your pup, did you see all of them? I picked the orange collared male, his name is Zar. Which one did you get?
Yes crate training can be tough. Zar has been a real treat so far. I`ll have him 2 weeks tomorrow and no accidents in his crate yet. He`s gone as long as 5 hours already. I think if i let him go all night he would be fine but i don`t want to push it.
My mal Diesel was a real bear. He was 6 or 7 months old and still going in his crate some. I was ready to strangle him. He is now 13 months and doing great.
By the way there is a lot of info about Diesel on the blog, check it out.
