Is the United Doberman Club a "real" working dog club? I read some unflattering things here in a post from the past about the UDC and their "total doberman" ideals. But to my inexperienced eyes, the club seems to be a working dog club. They do have conformation competitions at their nationals, but there are a ton of SCHIII dogs in their club too. Do they use the same judges and criteria for titles as USA and DVG? Is it a good idea to look at UDC competition winning dog kennels like Cara and Swift Run for a potential schutzhund puppy?
To my knowledge the UDC was founded as a response to the AKC, and subsequently the DPC (Doberman Pinscher Club) banning protection sports from their club activities.
I don't know much about the UDC other than that they believe strongly in the preservation of the working/protection abilities of the Dobermann, and don't feel that the other positive attributes (like confirmation) need to be sacrificed in order to do so. I can't speak to their ethics or ideals though because I'm not a member and I really don't know that much about them.

I don´t know much about US kennels but I know that Cara´s Red Sasha is the winner of IDC IPO championship and had participated in many competitions (also was the winner of the first IPO championship in Estonia). She is a doll on her spare time (her owner Ludek says that she is a budist ).
Unfortunately you can´t evaluate a kennel by one dog but I think it is worth looking into it.
Kristel is correct. The UDC formation was in response to AKC not promoting the "total doberman". Recently AKC/DPCA are trying to change that, and are trying to have the WAE testing available more often and trying to put on trials.
The UDC trials are IPO trials and the judges are from from the DVG organization or an FCI judge. California is having their first Western Regional Event in April that will include conformation and an IPO trial.
The UDC puts out a quarterly magazine free to all members that have training articles, specific breed information, search and rescue, Schutzhund, AKC Obedience etc. Great information for us Doberman lovers.
