We're in Southern California (91306). Anyone have any ideas for a good place to buy a small freezer. We have two dogs and will feed them approx. 4 lbs/day or approx. 120/month.
Also, any ideas about how many pounds a 5.5 cubic foot freezer will hold?
CostCo. There are two manufactures of chest-type freezers in the US & Canada. This means that most of the 'brands' you see are just different labels for the same appliance.
... they're all primarily manufactured by three companies: Frigidaire (owned by Electrolux), W.C. Wood (based in Canada) and Haier (based in China>. Frigidaire makes freezers under the Frigidaire and Gibson names, and along with Haier, makes some freezers for Kenmore and GE. W.C. Wood makes freezers for Amana, Magic Chef, some units for Maytag, Danby and Whirlpool. Haier makes freezers for GE, Kenmore, some units for Maytag and Amana in addition to selling some models under its own name. Thus, it's no surprise that reviewers find no significant differences in efficiency and performance between brands of the same manufacturers (as long as they're new models of similar size and style). This also means that shoppers can pay a premium for high-profile names when the products are nearly identical. For example, Frigidaire freezers sometimes cost more than GE freezers and Maytag freezers may fetch a premium over a W.C. Wood freezer.
The 5.5 cu.ft. freezer will hold about 200# of meat. That, of course depends on how tightly you pack it.
The site noted that modern freezers have the condensing coils soldered to the outside wall of the unit. When the freezer is turned off for extended periods -- more than a couple of weeks, condensation will form inside these walls and corrode the coils causing a leak.
Do any of you keep those small chest freezers outside? I was looking at them a while back when I started researching raw and none of them say whether or not they are outdoor rated... I just have no space for any more appliances inside.
A few years ago, Pacific Gas & Electric was out buying up all old, inefficient fridges that people had in their garages. Cut power demand enough to avoid having to build another power plant.
