Do your homework and check track records of breeders you are considering. Don't get bowled over by fancy ads, websites, price$$ or pedigrees. Ask breeders about health guarantees, contracts etc... Some want you to sign away your life.
Since you are on a predominately GSD board, the best breed to get is a GSD! But you have to ask yourself what attributes you want from a dog. Do you want a high energy dog? Then get a Malinois. Do you like the look of Mastiffs, then get a Rottweiler. Do you want other dogs and pets in the home, then stay away from pit bulls and Akitas. These are just blanket statements that generalize certain breeds and their traits, but also must be taken into consideration.
Also research the pedigrees and try to learn about the bloodlines and the predominate characteristics that are passed on: hardness, biddibility, clear-headed, ect. As evident on this board, some dogs are too much to handle for some people. That said, know your limitations.
I happen to be one that shopped around for a dog by websites and research. I chose my breeder because of the amount of information he was willing to give, training philosophies, health and diet and photos. I have no regrets and am very pleased with my girl. The research hasn't stopped either!
Keep those fingers on the keyboard and do your studying!
