My valves are robbed on a regular basis from my car tires by drug addicts/thieves. I am very busy, so I do not have time to buy new ones all the time. I have considered an alarm, but I have heard it would not be sensitive enough.
So I was wondering, my dog already barks when people approach my home, would it be possible to train my dog to bark at approaching strangers when he is sitting in my car?
I would appreciate a link to a post if this Q has been posted before. I have read somewhere that someone should to sneak up on the dog while he is sitting in the car, but my dog does not get startled so easily (calm nerves).

I would say yes, it is possible. It depends on the dog. However, if you truly don't have time, you might consider something else. Just remember the bottom line: if somone wants to steal your car, it's contents,or wheels; they ARE going to do it. Dog or not.

Very possible and, actually, not all that difficult. Just remember to install an "off" switch as well.

I assume your dog has speak/quiet commands?
Once you have those, and if all you're asking the dog to do is bark in the vehicle at anyone approaching, it shouldn't be too difficult.
I'd enlist someone to work with you, while you sit in the vehicle with your dog. Soon as that person reaches whatever distance from your vehicle you'd like your dog to respond to, give your dog its speak command and reward it for barking. When the person leaves and gets far enough away, give the quiet command. Eventually, you can leave the vehicle and reward verbally from outside, then eventually, go out of his sight, etc.
Once your dog understands what you want, it won't be a matter of nerves, but of him doing his job...that he understands.
That's such a drag about all that vandalism

Does your dog not bark at people when he is in the car?
My Mals go nuts when people approach my vehicle, and with the tinted windows they cannot tell if they are in crates or not....

Well, not exactly , I do give a loud "Hey!" when he starts whining (works for me), but that is as far as it goes.
But I think it is time to train him the speak command. This dog does not have food drive only prey drive, what would be the best way to teach him the geblout command?

Rosalinda,
Be careful what you wish for :-) I'd be wary of teaching this to the dog and heightening his suspicion level. Also you may need to have electric on him all the timer in the car if you want to reinforce that off switch when the dog decides it's furry finger time!
You can buy a car alarm with a proximity alert but I don't know how expensive they are.

Use toys<g>. Besides, toys are more revving, while food is more calming, anyway.
Do something with a prey toy that you know will make him bark...waving it over your head with a lot of energy, enticing him with it but not letting him get to it, whatever it takes (you know your dog...). Once he starts barking to get at it, in excitement and/or frustration, reward him with the toy and play. Repeat.
Once he gets this is the new game, start attaching your speak command..."good speak" when he's barking, then reward with the toy. Etc.

You must be right because I have heard this before. But I still prefer this to a dog which only changes from dr. Jeckell to mr. Hide when he sees another dog (esp.male).

I taught my dog to speak with a squeaky toy. You could use any thing that gets him excited. I would just hold it out and squeeze it (squeak, squeak) followed by Speak/geb laut, he would bark and I would praise. Had him barking on command the first day.
Good luck...
