I was looking online at Klatolkin K9 and their free puppy program.
In theory I think this sounds like a great idea to promote one's kennel and to increase the desire to keep the breed true to its working nature.
Do any sport dog owners, SAR or LEO handlers have any thoughts opinions on this system?
The one problem that I can see with it is the control that the kennel name has when people breed their dogs.
Has anyone had any experience with a program like this?

I know they only do it if you reside in Alaska.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't limited to residents in Alaska. If it is, I can't find where it says that on the web page, and they should really put that on there.
The free puppy program that they have is an incentive program to work and trail your dogs. They give 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% off of your next puppy purchase if you complete certain certifacations and send the copies of them as confirmation.
Free Puppy Program
I just thought this was really neat and interesting, and was curious as to how their sucess with it will work.

They promote titling of their pups to the buyers... but then have an untitled dog(Othello, BH) up for stud for the same breeding fee as a SchH III dog... Does that jive?
Maybe it's just me, but it seems strange to promote titling, and not do it on your own stud dogs before making babies with them. He does have a BH, but to me that is hardly enough to know if he is breeding material.
However, I know I am off topic, the free puppy program sounds like a great idea, and this is the first time I've heard of it.

my sister is involved with breeding/trialing hunting Labs, and one of the associations they belong to has basically a "free puppy" program, ie, any one of the breeders belonging to the assoc. donates a pup to a YOUNG PERSON. that young person is required to train/title said pup. i think it's a great way to promote the sport and get young ppl involved.
i actually considered proposing such a program to USA, but got disgusted with that association. still--a darn good idea in my book. and from what i've seen/heard, Klatolkin is an ethical breeder.

I couldn´t spot the birth date of the male but perhaps he hasn´t been titled YET. He is said to be PPD. If a breeder spots great talent I think it is not a bad sign to offer the dog for breeding before the talent is manifested into titles. It is always possible for other breeders not to choose the dog for breeding at this point.
Just crossed my mind because the male that Veedas breeder chose for her (we have a special contract with her) was a nobody in the beginning of this year and a breeder (that hadn´t even seen him) badmouthed the stud and explained it with the lack of show results. Well, today the dog has several ch titles and great results from very big shows. I am positive that the pups from breeding from the beginning of the would have been as good as the ones from breeding now.

I was only commenting on their program that they have.
I think that idea/concept that they have is really great and was wondering if anyone else had experience with something like that like Ann.
I too think thats a great way to get young people involved in the sport. Do you know if the results from that were very good?
Has anyone else had any experience like this?

If I was given a free small dog I would title the heck out of it provided the temperament is there. Any takers? I was working towards competition OB with my parent's lab Einstein but he developed an orthopedic problem and went to live with my brother because of pack issues.

megan,
i can check w/sister to see if they have results over time, but i can also tell you this: my step-nephew got a pup, Callie, thru the Lab program a year ago. he has titled her so far to the level 1 hunting title. i was there at his first trial with her, and he thought he'd blown it (handler error) but hadn't; what he thought was a total disaster (he's 16) turned into the first step of his first title with her. i was proud of him and Callie--couldn't have done better myself if i'd known what i was doing.

I actually have a puppy from Klatolklin. She is proving to be an exceptional pup, and I'm looking forward to earning my free or discounted puppy. It is not only for Alaska, but for anyone that purchases a puppy from them. I think it is a great idea. It's good for everyone. People will try harder to title there dogs, the dogs get to do what they were bred for and the breeder gets more titled dogs from their kennel.
I haven't seen anyone else doing this. Besides really wanting a puppy sired by Axel, the free puppy program was part of what made me decided to get my puppy there.
