hi folks
OK I'm training the "touch" command with our 10 m.o. puppy Layla. I have trained her to sit and them come to me in order to "touch". Lately I've been lifting my hand to have her jump for my palm (with food treat in the palm). She's doing great. But...now she's starting to jump a little at other times, especially when we're getting ready to go for our walks. Layla's not a "strong willed" dog, very soft. I am trying not to use the prong collar on her. Any ideas how to stop the jumping are very appreciated.
Thanks
Chuck

I have always had good luck curing jumping by simply turning my back and crossing my arms and totally ignoring the dog.
Sometimes this means I am turning in circles for a minute or so but it has always worked better than anything else.

Is she putting her paws on you, or just doing little hops?

I second the back turning. It worked great for Teagan, who is not a soft dog at all. She got it really quickly (with me at least, and she's pretty good about Toby and my brother, though every now and then forgets herself). It worked way better than correcting her.
Teagan!

Yote is not soft at all either, and correcting him only egged it on, while turning my back solved the problem really quickly. He still forgets himself sometimes but he is only 11 months old.

thanks for your advice. Actually, you misunderstood me a little. Layla is definitely a soft dog which is why I don't want to use the prong collar yet.
she's putting her paws on me, yes. She's also pawing up on the wall by the front door.
I'll turn my back and see how that works :-)

I think some dogs come with spring-loaded front ends. It takes awhile to grow out of it.
Danke does six-foot bunny hops by the back door when it's time to go out.

Chuck,
I'm not sure why you'd want to start a puppy on this kind of jumping up behavior, but since you know she's going to do it, and you've already put "touch" on cue, put your hand out at her head height and have her touch to stay at that height and not jump up. Then, you could have her sit, for example, if you're getting ready to go out the door, etc.
Preventing unwanted behavior before she gets a chance to keep practicing it is part of the thing. You already know when she's likely to do this behavior, so give her something else to do before she does it.
And, now that you've established this behavior, you can put it on cue ("hup" or whatever), then you can add "off" as it's opposite. Some people here don't like teaching opposites, I do, it's all personal preference<g>.

Similar to what I was thinking...lower your hand so she doesn't have to jump up on the "touch" command.
