So my little brother is moving to Alaska (Anchorage) for work. Coming down to Texas for Thanksgiving and then flying up there directly from here.
I'd like to get him something useful he can use that he maybe doesn't know he needs yet... are there such things? Stuff that newbies to Alaska need? I should comment that he's moving from Oklahoma and has moderate cold weather gear already (I have no idea how cold it gets up in Anchorage to compare to).
Just looking for ideas... and being in south Texas it feels a little like he's moving to the moon, lol I'm excited for him though- he's going to have a blast-- already went snowmobile shopping when he went up to find a place to live; apparently he has his priorities...
I've lived in Anchorage before. Alaska is fantastic!
Anchorage is not so bad weatherwise. Normal winter temperatures are about 10 degrees (F). That seems cold, but you get accustomed to it. It's the sunrise and sunset that is the culture shock. In the height of winter, the sun will rise about 10am and set about 2pm. In the height of summer, the sun will set at about 10pm and rise about 2am. But you will only have total darkness for about 2 hours.
Fairbanks is a totally different story, however. You're looking at -60 degrees up there. That's where the curvature of the Earth really starts getting dramatic. At the height of winter, you'll have 2 weeks of straight darkness, and the opposite for the summer. The sun will just do continuous loops in the sky.
As far as gifts go, I would give him a gift certificate to REI, the chain outdoor equipment store. They have a great one in Anchorage and that way he could use that to buy what he needs. He'll figure out from the locals what exactly he needs when he gets up there.
