Just wondered if anyone had any advice about supplements and gsd. I have wondered for some time if a joint supplement could be added to my 8 month old gsd(f)food, too maybe help with hip and joint development while she is young, so as to maybe repair any stress if incurred, or to insure proper development for adulthood before, or to help prevent a problem that may develope that would necessitate the need for supplements such as joint oats or grand flex. I have read the description of these supplements, but seems they are all given to an older dog that exibit problems or arthritis, or to working (heavily exercised) dogs.
Thank you for your answers, am here dailey, reading, learning lots, usually do not have many questions that I do not see an answer too.
There are a couple of threads on this in the 'nutritional supplement' section (down near the bottom of the board, after natural diet and health issues).
As far as I can remember, joint supplements work to repair joint tissue that has degenerated, and don't really act on healthy tissue. It's not going to hurt to supplement, but my understanding is that there is no proof it does anything positive either (eta: in a healthy dog).
Hi Theresa, I started giving my gsd glucosamine when she was a pup. Not the full dosage, just one pill a day. Didn't seem to hurt her and she grew up strong and healthy as a horse. She will be 5 in December.
Thank you for your response Jennifer, I did find some threads in my search. But my question was in regard to that I realize that supplements are used to repair joint damage incurred, but are stressed "heathy joints" not in need of some support.
Thank you Sandra for your response. I too want to begin giving glucosamine before adulthood, glad to learn that someone else has done this with no negative health concerns at an earlier age. I do not know the dosing for this supplement, so my question to you is did you continue with the one pill a day through her adult life, or up the dose at maturity (18 months or 2 years of age)? Do you still continue to give this supplement?
Healthy joints should be able to handle stress by themselves. What type of stress are you talking about/anticipating?
The best thing you can do IMO to keep joints well is keep your girl at a healthy weight and make sure she gets lots of exercise for strong joints (recognizing that she's still young and caution should be exercised there).
