Does anyone have experience with Alta- Tollhaus kennels in Marshall, MI? I am looking to purchase a low to mid drive GSD for family companion and protection, obviously with good hips/elbows etc and disposition. Their website is 24kgsd.com.

Have really limited experience with their dogs, but know of someone who has one of their dogs and a pup on another board and saw one run in agilty...very nice dogs and very respected breeders from what I can gather.

We had a wonderful experience with Alta Tollhaus. Our dog is beautiful...I believe he came hips, heart, eyes, etc certified. He is a great family dog, always wants to be "part of the pack." And of course, he is a wonderful watch dog! Julie, who runs the kennels takes pride in breeding beautiful, healthy, lovable dogs and she truly loves the GSD.
We would definietly go back to Alta Tollhaus to get another GSD! We felt like we really hit the jackpot when we found her (and our dog)!

Good luck trying to protection train a "low to mid drive" GSD, it won't work.
I'm not saying that in a mean way, it's just the truth of the matter.

If a lower drive dog will fit in better with your life, a German Shepherd with good ob and a bark or alert on command will do wonders as far as stopping a potential problem.

I do have to get a plug in for my favorite dog type here. It is possible to have a higher or high drive dog that settles well in the house! The only reason my dogs are rotated in and out of the kennel is because i have a whole bunch of them!
They do settle in very good in the house and I bring one to work with me and they are fine in the office. Of course when they are pups you kind of run around having a quiet nervous breakdown but that is part of the fun.

I disagree with this statement. Most all dogs with varying drives from varying breeds can be taught to some extent to be a person protection dog. There are many different drives, so what drive are these people talking about, they might not know either. There are also various methods on training protection dogs, some dogs require different methods. A med drive dog can be trained, a low drive dog can be trained, whether they are talking about prey or defense. It can be done, and can be done correctly. Most people dont know how to train them, they think this is the type of dog you need and this is how its done. Dogs are like people, millions of different ones, each needs a little different tweak. You are in Michigan, take a look at chercarkennels.com Cheryl Carlson, she breeds various drives of working shepherds too if you are still loooking, but she offers excellent personal protection classes, shoot her an email, or call her, she will be happy to discuss anything with you.

Nicholas,
Feel free to disagree, but I ran a busy PPD business for several years and trained *a lot* of good PPDs. And I'm fairly certain that I understand the drives and training of PPD's as well as anybody currently producing PPD's on a professional basis.
I'll stand by my statement based on my experience, which is fairly extensive.

For anyone interested. I did purchase a puppy from Alta Tollhaus of Marshall, MI and am truly glad I did. Having corresponded with Julie Richards-Mostosky (the breeder) numerous times and visiting her home and breeding facility twice, we made a very easy decision to purchase from this dedicated breeder.
As Bethany mentioned in a previous post, this is a breeder who truly cares for her dogs, the breed and to whom she sells her pups. Her dogs are used for police work and assistance dog work, as well as for competiton, protection and of course pets. It seems there is nothing her pups are not successful in.
Every new owner received a training class and copius amounts of information on training, socialization etc. Julie also runs a first class training facility for all breeds which I would highly recommend.
