I have a K9 that is trained in dope detection. He can also track someone outstanding. I will be moving to the western mountains this spring. I was wondering if it would mess him up in his narco. detection if I would also train him in corpse scent. I checked with other friends of mine that work K9 and they are not sure. Do any of y'all know if I should just leave him doing narco. and thats it so it won't mess him up?

Can it be done? Yes. Should it be done is another question. If you are law enforcement, it could cause some problems with vehicle contacts. There is also the matter of the response. Which response do you use for drugs and what response are you considering for cadaver. If the cadaver dog would be used in an area where probable cause could be a factor, you could run into the same problem as with vehicles and drugs. It wouldn't be the best to have the same response. Personally, as a law enforcement trainer, I wouldn't permit it.

I'm with David on this one. Not a good idea. Also, it's a boat load of pressure in keeping up the training. Save yourself some grief and stay as is. JMO

Hi Jerry,
By Western Mountains I am assuming you are moving from the foothills of NC to the mountains of NC? (my trainer just moved here from NC so I had to ask her )
Did your department ever introduce your dog to pseudo corpse scent at all?
And, is there a need in the dept you are moving to for cadaver dogs?
I am with Howard and David as to not doing it, but, you could train that handsome little puppy to do it via a local SAR team.
It would require, like David mentioned, a whole different indication for your dog and may quite possibly mess with your narcs training.

Thank you David,Howard, and Carol I respect all that y'all have said. And I know you know what your talking about thats why I came here. So I think I will train the puppy that you see who is now 1 year old how to work as a cadaver K9. She should do real good since she has outstanding prey drive. And since her grandfather is (Rabauke vom Braunschweiger Wappen)The world 2003 Schutzhund Champion. And great grandfather is Xato v. d. Bosen Nachbarschaft sire of the 1998 World Champion and the 1999 BSP Champion.I will have something to work with. I will be breeding them in 10 months and already have friends of mine in LE K9 that want puppies. So I will listen to y'all and I will train her. I want to thank you for responding to my post.
Thank You....JERRY
PS Carol I live in the mountains of NC. Moving to Montana.

YES....I was initially correct....although my trainer who is from Winston-Salem was saying that you probably meant that you were moving to the western mountains of NC....but I did tell her that I thought maybe you meant moving from NC to the mountains of somewhere like MT....
What part of MT are you moving to? I know some great folks in SAR over there and I train with them often (well, as often as I can get out of town and travel that far...usually 3 times a year or more.)
If your in an area where I am familiar with the folks, I would love to introduce you to them so you will have someone to train with....

I will be near Helena,MT or above Bozeman,MT in Gallatin county. I know LE K9 handers in three states there. I hope that S&R or SAR there are not like they are here. I was with CSR here for 5 years with my Rottie who was great and trained in bite work. They never new it cause they didn't ask. But now that I have a GSD that is also a dual purpose K9 they don't want a dog that is bite trained. Even though I control my dog. They don't care to use him here. I heard the guy in charge here got bit by a dog so he wants poodles. I would say they don't want a dog that would make there dogs look bad!!!! I know that I sound sour. But I would want the best dogs in tracking I could fine in my area. And I will put my dog agaisn't their dogs in any type of tracking that they want. My dog plays with children all the time and will not bite someone unless I command him too. Anyway I will be moving there in the spring. Please keep in touch I would love to meet some of your friends there. Thanks Carol
PS I'm trying to put a new pix of my two dogs but lost the pixI had and don't remember how to put a pix back here again.

Hey Jerry,
I am in Billings, MT and due to my occupation, know the K9 handlers in Billings. Feel free to contact me if you need any info about that or the area. Used to live in Bozeman and have plenty of contacts in Helena.

Open up a Photobucket account and upload to their site. Then you can copy and paste to your profile. Would be an improvement over your current sig...

Hi Ingrid
I love those dogs you have they are so smart. And just a all around great dog.Yes I'm looking to move out there. I know a K9 officer in Helena and he also told me they have a great VA hospital there.I'm a Vet and I use the VA for my medical services. How is the land prices in Billings? I would like to get 5 or 10 acres and put a real nice modular home on it. That way I could keep training my two knotheads and help train others or have other K9 handlers help with my dogs like ( artical, building searches, bite work, dope, and tracking).Could you get back to me about land prices were you live? I use to hunt in Ennis,MT. when I worked with LAPD. I loved that area. Thank you for your help.
