I have heard several people saying that you should not do any bite work or tug with a puppy who is teething, so that they dont think of bite work as painful. My question is what if they dont seem to be in any pain? I noticed today that Kane is teething during play time. I noticed blood on his tug and sure enough when I peeked in I noticed some teeth coming in and one missing. He didnt apear to be ion any pain and wanted to continue to play. Should I still hold off until teething is over or wait to sense pain? Does teething have any symptoms other that bleeding or painful gums? Do they run fevers, diarhrea, not want to eat, etc? Kane is not experiencing ANY symptoms other than bleeding gums, but just wondering what to watch for? Thanks everyone!
Yeah I would not do any bite work with him now, even though his is not in pain, but you might want to tie him to a post and just tease him with the tug to build up his drive, it will build up alot of frustration and when he is done teething you should see a crazy aligator.
I agree with Khoi, wait it out. While he might not show any symptoms today, if he bites down and loses one that wasn't ready to pop out tomorrow and it hurts him, you could pay for it.
Roll up some wet wash cloths and chuck them in the freezer. My pups always love that.
Yeah I think Im going to freeze some rags tonight... not sure if hell go for it. My old dogs loved frozen anything and loved crushed iced... Kane doesnt like ice... shows no interest. How long should I expect him to be teething?
Wow thats 2-3 months of no tug or bite work! Guess Im going to hve to find something else to do!
I'm going thru this with my pup right now. It's a perfect time to concentrate on his motivational obedience and retrieving. Thunder loves to play tug with an old burlap sack, and will shove it into my hands if I ignor him. That's put up for now. He still wants to retrieve his kong on a rope but has learned I wont play tug with him now. I build drive for it, and then toss it for him to retrieve. Since I haven't introduced a formal out yet, he's learned to bring it to my hands if he wants it thrown again. When I stop playing (while he's still crazy for it) I build his drive again and put it away. Since he is being trained for SAR, he's also been doing run aways for the beginning of his trailing/air scent work. I can't imagine running out of things to do with him thru his teething period.
