I am just tryiing to understand dog behavior better and was wondering why my 10 week old GSD sometimes barks and bites at his feeding bowl. He also does this to his water bowl. It looks as if he is just playing, ears and tail are up, but when he grabs the bowl he quickly drops it and jumps back barking. What do you think?
Is it a stainless steel bowl? maybe he see his reflection in the bowl and want to dominate it.
It's usually a prey drive thing, they figure out that if they bite the bowl it moves and makes an interesting sound...some dogs play "hockey' with their bowls. I guess from a dog's view, it can be entertaining.
I try not to let puppies do this if at all possible, i have seen it become an obsessive/compulsive thing as they grow up..kind of like spinning in a kennel or tail chasing.
with pups,I take the food bowl away as soon as they are done eating and use a bowl or bucket that can be secured so they can't chase it around.
I've had to do as Cindy described, and take them up after feeding. Thunder's stainless bowls were much to fun to just eat out of and bowl hockey in the kitchen just didn't make it with my wife. He would pounce on the upside down bowl and shot it accross the kitchen floor. He would also chew on them. That was like nails on a blackboard.
Thanks for the replys. i kind of figured it was just prey drive. I usually do pick up his bowl immediately but this time i forgot and thats when he went nuts.
