Does anyone have any ideas on this behavior?
Last night and this morning I noticed my senior girl was hiding in the corner shaking and salivating while we were eating dinner and then breakfast.
She was shaking so bad I got up and checked the radar last night thinking there was a storm coming...there wasn't. This morning she did the same thing.
She has not had a correction that I can remember other than one of saying no, or possibly clapping while saying no, and she certainly has no reason to be afraid of us.
She is so old and sweet that I hate it when anything is bothering her!

Well I have an update already LOL
She is as I type hiding under my desk and shaking like crazy as well as salivating and whining.
my son is playing playstation, I am on the computer and the other two dogs are sleeping soundly. Nothing chaotic going on here at all to freak her out.
Oh and we are obviously not eating and there are no storms within 80-100 miles and none of the rainshowers look to contain any real thunder of lightening.

I was going to ask if she'd been having any physical problems lately as well, or any other behavioural changes.
Are the dogs out together? Could there have been a fight or something happen, maybe not in front of you, but when they were out, to upset/scare her? How is she with the other dogs?

How old is she, any medical conditions? My German short haired pointer started doing that with age. Regretfully he had cancer and pasted on soon after. I'd get her checked out. How is she when you interact with her?

No no other physical problems lately, other than an ear infection that is cleared up now, it was re-checked last week. There are some signs of aging in a general sense, slowing down some and also a little hearing and sigh loss but nothing major.
The dogs have not been outside alone in weeks, and they don't ever bother her anyway. She is definately the queen bee and they both defer to her and dote on her.
ETA: she seems fine now, we just came in from outside and she found her ball and she is not chewing on it happily.
This makes me wonder if she is having some sort of "episode" She had what we think was possibly a mini stroke that affected her balance and eyes for a few weeks but she recovered to normal functions within a month and has been fine since.

I'm quite interested in this - let me know what you find out. My bitch has just started doing something similar again for no apparent reason.

I am probably quite wrong in this, but when you talk about shaking, salivating, and "hiding", I flash back to Daisy, my first dog. She had epilepsy as a result of a very high fever during distemper illness and had many, many "mini seizures" in a day, then less and less, until finally very few a year but quite severe.
(The epilepsy wasn't easy to diagnose at first until she had a seizure in the presence of the vet.)
Having said that, if it is seizures, just know our Daisy did quite well on meds and lived to a ripe old age and it was just something we all learned to live with.
I hope you find out what is up with your old girl and all is well. (Maybe there is a high pitched noise coming from the playstation and she can't stand it?) Oh, to be that simple...
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

She has done it one more time today and has otherwise been normal.
Seizures also crossed my mind, but I hope that isn't the case as she reacts badly to nearly all medications we have ever given her.
We did have a cold front coming through both last night and today, so I wonder if the changes in barometric pressure are enough to set her off even without the lightening and thunder. maybe she is getting more sensitive to it as she ages.
Generally it is only lightening, thunder, guns and fireworks that scare her and make her hide, shake and salivate.

How old is old? Sometimes elderly dogs can have minor strokes which can cause this behavior. Another behavior alteration I have noticed in one or two is when their mind begins to go. Certain sensation or smells can suddenly cause a fear response where there was not one before.
