Hi another basic question -
I am currently training a spaniel for detection work. He was completely untrained when I got him - I taught him sit before making it his alert. That's all going fine and he automatically sits now (he is not asked to at any other time) - I have done no obedience work except recalls etc.
I have since decided to train my pet (working line) GSD as my back-up or second dog. He took to the inital training far better than any dog I have ever seen worked. I'm not asking for a sit at the moment as I am concentrating on the find.
Question is as he is obedience trained will he be able to figure out that this 'sit' is different than a normal sit? Or is there another passive alert I can use? Will it be more difficult getting an automatic sit for the scent when you have a dog who will automatically sit when I stop walking (if he's in heel)?
A passive response, (I've used, sit, down, and point), when fully trained is a conditioned response. Meaning, the dog should sit when you command it and sit when it encounters the odor. Same response, just different stimuli being used. In short, when trained, the dog will sit when commanded or sit when it smells drugs it was trained to detect.

Tanith,
With you being concerned about him sitting when you stop walking are you training him to be a body scanner?
It wouldn't matter what the application is. If a dog is being trained with a passive response of sit, it shouldn't sit just because the handler stopped moving. If it does, it's a training fault and can cause serious problems in the work environment. In short, a dog trained to give a passive response of sit, should sit only when told or when it finds source of an odor it was trained to attend to. regardless of the application, anything other than that would be wrong.
