I know we just had the Thanksgiving thread but at least in my family we have the foods that show up just for Xmas.
My favorites for the holidays are Buckeye balls and Russian Tea. Simple yet OMG.... so good.
BUCKEYE BALLS
1 stick butter
1 lb. confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 c. peanut butter (12 oz.)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pkg. chocolate chips (12 oz.)
1/2 c parawax
Mix butter, sugar, peanut butter and vanilla and make into balls. Chill 1 hour. Melt chocolate chips with parawax in a double boiler. Insert toothpick into balls and dip in chocolate mixture. Leaving small area at top to represent buckeyes.
Russian tea
1/2 cup instant tea powder
2 cups tang
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Mix well. Store in a dry container. Add to near boiling water to taste.

In my family Buckeye Balls are called Peanut Butter Balls...and they are yummy! Our recipe is slightly different:
1/2 C. Butter, softened
2 C. Crunchy Peanut Butter
1 lb. Powdered Sugar
3 1/2 C. Rice Krispies
6oz. Chocolate chips
8oz. Hershey's Chocolate Bar
1/2 bar Parafin Wax
Combine butter, peanut butter, sugar and Rice Krispies and mix well with a mixer. Roll into small balls and chill in fridge several hours or overnight. Melt both chocolates and parafin, keep warm while dipping, and dip balls in chocolate to cover. Place on wax paper to cool and set.
These even taste good frozen so hiding them in the freezer doesn't work.
I've already cranked out decorated sugar and gingerbread cookies. Next weekend I'm making my annual Gingerbread House and this year I'm going to try a Buche de Noel for Christmas dessert.
I make all this stuff and I don't eat it!

If you add bits of candied gingerroot to gingersnap and other spicy cookie recipes, it adds a wonderful burst of fresh ginger taste.

At my Mom's we have non-traditional food: soup, blackbeans, and homemade chili. The blackbeans are always my contribution.
At my in-laws, it's seafood. My father-in-law drives down to Texas City (about a 3 hour drive)and gets fresh shrimp, clams, oysters, crab legs, etc etc. YUM! My mom-in-law is incredibly good at preparing all of it. We (kids and grand kids)provide snacky stuff and desserts.
FYI: it's easy to warm up fried foods, like shrimp, fries, etc, using a pizza stone. Crisps them right up!

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you....
I'm kind of a dump & pour kind of cook, so I can't tell you exact amounts.
1 package dry black beans
about 1 cup dry pintos
lots of chili powder and black pepper
several good shakes of garlic powder, cumin, red pepper, paprika, maybe a bay leaf
salt to taste
Place all in large crock pot, cover with water about 2 inches over top of beans. Cook all day on low. Stir at least once about half-way through. Eat for supper.
THEN, make BlackBean Chili:
Next day, brown some meat (hamburger is great but I prefer venison) with onion, garlic, Tony Chachere's seasoning to taste, several good shakes of savory. Add meat mixture to pot of beans with one can of Rotel. Cook on low for an hour or so.
Eat with rice, tortilla chips, tortillas....
I do lots of substitutions, so I had a hard time even writing this much. Such as: add small can corn, hominy, jalapenos, frozen mixed veggies, or just whatever is lying around the house.

Sounds like a good idea to go with our annual bucket of margaritas, tamales, and carnitas we have with the neighbors the night before X mas eve. It's our way of being friendly for dealing with our strange family of four legged friends, the boat depot we have going in our yard, and my epic garden smells.
