I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a litter for some time now. As the due date passed (Dec. 6), I contacted the breeder - who is well known and has a very good program. She informs me that as today is the last day for the bitch to deliver, she suspects that she may have reabsorbed. It appears too me that this means the bitch never got pregnant? Is this right? What EXACTLY is reabsorption and how often does this occur? Are there ways to prevent it? I know the breeder typically breeds the bitch and then 2 days later does it again with the same stud as a means of being sure. Any insights would be appreciated.
Puppies CAN be reabsorbed, but I believe that happens pretty early in the pregnancy. I think stress can cause it, physical or emotional. I'm not sure how often it occurs, but it is basically just what it sounds like, the bitch's body reabsorbs the fetuses. I am not sure how late into the pregnancy this can occur. I know beyond a certain point the pups would be aborted rather than reabsorbed.
If there was no pregnancy confirmation then it is definitely possible she didn't take to begin with. I am sure people with more breeding experience than I will weigh in for you.

Connie's link explains it clearer then I would and I think pretty much touched on all of your questions.
Best bet would be talk to the breeder. If the breeder had had the pregnancy confirmed that is does sound like they were reabsorbed. If she hadn't there is a possibility that the breeding did not take for any of many reasons.
I would suspect that for whatever reason the girl is not carrying pups. Otherwise the breeder would of noticed a temp drop, nesting activity and she would be producing milk.
Planned breedings seem much harder then the accidental ones. <grin>
If you've been waiting for a pup that has got to be disappointing for you.
