I recently purchased a 4 month old male GSD. When I went to the breeder and looked at the puppies he was the boldest one. I don't know if the breeder socialized the puppies much with people, because there seems to be a little fear. My question though is about his prey drive. He chases and plays with our cat all the time. It seems he is always chasing and playing with it. He also plays with toys with our 1 year old male rottie. However, whenever I try to throw a ball he totally ignores it. When I dangle a rope toy in front of him he also seems to ignore it. If I drag the toy across the ground, he shows interest. It seems he is afraid of playing with me and my wife, but loves to play with the other dog and the cat. Any help on how I can motivate him to play so I can work on his drive? I know his current temperment will never allow him to do any type of bite work. Thank you for any help you can offer.
IMO, I would try separating him from your other animals. He doesn't need you for entertainment as long as he has his "buddies" to play with. "You" should be the "center" of his universe. All toys come from you when "you" decide and get taken away by you when your done playing with him. Keep your drive building sessions short. You always want to leave your dog craving more when you end your session, not tired out and bored. Get a buggy whip and tie a ball to end of it to build prey drive. This works like a champ for some dogs. Puppies go through different stages of development which include fear periods. It's important to socialize him and continue to expose him to new environments. Don't force him, let him explore at his own pace. I wouldn't rule out bite work due to his temperment yet, he is still virtually a baby and has a long way to go. He may end up surprising you. In any case good luck with him. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for the advice. His temperment has changed in the last few weeks. He is much more aggressive to the toys and shows alot less fear. Thanks again!
