Hi All, I am new to this board, but I have a question.
I have a 19 month old female dog who has not had her 1st heat cycle as of yet. What is the latest you have heard of a dog having her 1st heat? Should I be concerned or wait a bit longer? Also does anyone have any tricks up there sleeves to bring on her cycle? I have heard of bringing her to another bitch that is in season to bring on hers, but I don't know of any females near me that are in season....I am planning to take her into the vet for a check up to see if there is anything obvious that is delaying her, but in the mean time I thought I'd check here.
It may just be that your dog is so clean that you are not noticing ,first couple of heats can be light, but it can be medical and may be worth a trip to the vet. What size and breed of dog? And yes if you can get her around a female in heat, that can trigger her if she is ready, but 2 females will fight sometimes, even if they know each other,if your dogs are big might not be a good idea.Vet might be the best choice they will do some blood test to check for alot of things. best to you

What breed? All of my girls and pups from my breeding pretty much come into first heat at about 8 months. These are German Shepherds.
My girls will also blow their coat about 3 weeks before coming into heat. I have 3 intact females and they do now all go into heat at the same time..........It took a while though.
A first heat can be very light and easy to miss if you don't have a male around and the dog is very clean. I will put a white towel in the crate if I suspect a girl is getting close and will also wipe down their private area with a damp wet cloth before their first urine in the am. You can catch very subtle bleeding this way.
At 19 months I would definately get full blood work done just to rule out a few things.

And this is going to sound strange so please don't get offended. Have you had her from a pup? If not is there any chance that she has been spayed? Believe it or not but I have actually heard of even vets missing that........

My oldest bitch didn't have her first heat until 18 months old. She is a toy breed dog so that makes her a really odd duck for that particular size category. She also has a 9 month wait in between heat cycles but it did not change her ability to have pups in the slightest. She had a nice litter of 4 last October.
I personally wouldn't worry or do anything until 24 months old.
