Not sure if this was talked about before but I just read about the class action lawsuit against the pet food co. and saw Natura Foods mentioned (innove, evo, cali natural) Didn't know there was issues with their food?
Wow. This scares me. I feed my guys Innova and that is pretty expensive stuff. Once I get my own place, I think I am making the switch to raw, I am sick of reading these dog food horror stories!
I've been using Evo for quite a while, I'm not about to change. I don't think there's any problem with the food, and that aspect is not even alleged in the lawsuit. There are a few key things in the article:
"It's more of a false advertising-type of case than product liability." and. . .
"The pet owners seek damages and injunctive relief to prevent pet food companies from advertising their product is akin to human food."
"Lead plaintiff's attorney Catherine MacIvor said people think of their pets as family members and should be assured the food they are feeding them is not dangerous. "People deserve to know what they are getting when they buy food for their pets,"
Sheesh!
The companies will probably settle this, and maybe they'll have to add a disclaimer to their packaging, something realistic, like,
"This bag contains food for your pet, you know, the one that sometimes eats poop and licks his butt. It's dog food, it wasn't made by a gourmet chef in an upscale restaurant. Get over it."
Natura’s marketing also makes the same misleading statements and guarantees as the other Defendants. For example, when marketing its commercial cat food, Natura represents that it is the “Healthiest Pet Food in the World.” Natura further states:
No pet food company in the world makes natural pet foods like Natura. We use only ingredients you’d eat yourself: quality meats, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and complete vitamin and mineral supplements. For us humans, a diet of natural, wholesome food is essential to living a long healthy life. We believe this fundamental principle is true for your pet, too.
Exhibit “10.” However, the pet food still contains carbohydrate fillers notwithstanding the marketing representations, including barley, rice and potatoes, and the same and/or similar chicken heads and feet described above that the other Defendant manufacturers use and which the Plaintiffs would hardly consider eating themselves given that they are deemed “inedible” for human consumption. Natura’s website indicates that the chicken meal it uses is exclusive of feathers, heads, feet or entrails, but testing has revealed the presence of feathers in Natura’s pet
food contrary to Natura’s representations. Moreover, testing of Natura products has also shown that Natura pet food contains glycoalkaloid toxins from the processing of green potatoes that is
at such a high level that it would be toxic to humans, much less small animals. See example at Exhibit “24.” The ingredients and known and unknown contaminants and additives hardly
comport with Natura’s claims of the “healthiest Pet Food in the World” and/or food that the Plaintiffs would eat.
Hmmm,I have no issue w/heads, beaks and feet and feathers, provided that the rest of the bird is there, too. I also feed whole furry rabbits....so I would have to know the whole story to make a decision/opinion on this one. If it's ONLY feathers, etc...then there's a problem. If it INCLUDES feathers, I don't really have a problem w/that.
Unfortunatly we will probably never know the whole story, I am currently still feeding EVO and don't plan on stopping unless I hear or experience problems like people are with canidae right now. I have never had any issues with any natura products.
I think the lawsuit sounds bogus, but I will say that the last bag of EVO I purchased (about 2 months ago) was not great. Each piece of kibble was coated with chaff; it seemed like the entire bag was scooped from the bottom of the barrel, so to speak. Poor quality control, IMO.
