My wife and I are installing new carpet. We want to put Berber (loop) carpet in the Living Room and Hallway. I wonder is this is a bad idea with Starbuck running around. I took a car key and I was able to tear out one of the loops. The tear opened up a section of the loop that continued to grow as I pulled on the thread.
Has anyone here had a problem with "loop" style carpet and the dog's nails?
Yes, my sister. Fortunately, she learned the hard way before I ever spent money on carpet and she had two GSD's. I have the shaggy carpet -frieze (not sure how to spell it) and it has held up pretty well.
BTW, her dogs also would chew up the carpet once the loops started pulling up.
Berber carpeting and dogs is a disaster !!!! Even if they are not destructive a nail can get caught in a loop !!! We had a repair guy who was able to replace several of the missing loops...but never again !!!
My GSD chews my berber carpeting. If she finds a loose string she will pull it. Bad part is some carpet is treated with formaldahyde. It sometimes comes out in her stool. I will be replacing with wood flooring.

Found this out the hard way, the tighter the carpet the harder it is to get rid of stains..........
We have commercial grade laminate in the house with throw rugs that can be thrown in the washer or even taken out and hosed down and then thrown in the washer.

Indoor/outdoor polypropylene rugs are GREAT! I have 2 in the high-traffic areas and no washing machine is even needed...just haul them out, scrub them down, they dry quickly and back inside they come. Stain, mildew, and mold resistant. Perfect if you have animals or kids.

My next house will have polished concrete floors throughout.
I'm so tired of trying to keep wall-to-wall carpeting looking presentable and live with multiple dogs. The one thing that helps is that I have heavily-patterned Oriental rugs on top of much of the wall-to-wall carpeting, and the patterns hide a world of sins.
If you're installing new carpeting (and have no choice to select a hard-surface floor instead) I'd explore patterned carpets. There are some nice allover pattern wall-to-wall carpets that might look better longer.
The actual color is Warm Cedar (much darker than the link). It is Stainmaster and has a pattern of small squares with high and low sections of loop.
We will have tile in about 1/2 the house (Entry, Office, Kitchen, Dining Room, Bathrooms). Berber in the Living Room and the Hallway (we have rugs in both these areas also). And cut pile carpet in the Bedrooms.
I like the polished concrete, but our baby (14 months old) bounced her head off the tile last night. I can't imagine if the whole house was concrete
