tonight on our (luc and teagan) run, for the first time since the attack (june), teagan saw the owner of the dog she attacked. neither of their dogs were out.
to my shock (i focused on staying loose and think i did a good job of not reacting), she started to go after him! she settled back into the run well on my command, but she ignores people when we're out running - they may well as not exist. so for her to not only pay attention to him, but to start to go after him - it really surprised me.
i thought there were 3 possibilities:
1)she remembered him hitting me (at the time, she had maybe 2" of leash, and i kept moving her away)
2)she remembered him kicking her (but he was barely kicking her, she didn't even notice it at the time. i think he was kicking so lightly b/c he was scared of her, which i can understand, but i'm not sure it would form a basis for her to dislike him now)
3)she remembered attacking his dog and got excited.
or was that all just coincidence? it was weird....

My dog can't remember where he left his frisbee 10 minutes ago. No joke. He's simple.

Dogs are masters of association to action, I don't like to think of it the same way as memory.
It's the same way the dog always seem know when you're coming home, when someone is at the door and know when you're going to get it, know when it's time to go for a walk before you even pick up the leash, and is how seizure dogs read their owner's symptoms.
For whatever reason the association may be there for Teagan and this person. He may smell the dogs, may smell the people, may have some other association for this action trigger. Either way, if this action is unacceptable to you, alter it.

I'm sorry. Didn't mean to dumb down your thread.
I still wouldn't write it off as a fluke. Maybe, but it doesn't sound far fetched at all for a powerful experience like what you had to stick in your dogs mind.

Teagan's a she
Good point. She did refocus well, so I was pleased with that (I find she is very easy to refocus on runs, in general far less reactive to other dogs for instance, which makes sense to me), I was just surprised she reacted at all.
And in other Teagan news, she went into a cupboard today and pulled out a box of SOS cleaning pads. I checked the label, it's all biodegradable soaps, so I decided not to freak out. She just puked one up....my poor girl. What kind of dog eats SOS pads?

LOL.
Maybe she'll remember.....SOS pads are not good to eat!
I don't know what it is Jennifer, whether it's association or imprinted memory, but dogs do seem to remember......exactly what they want to.
If my dog isn't learning, then I'm doing something wrong.
Randy
PS.
Contrads on keeping her 'with you' by feel.

True wins! Yikes!
Though I'd rate this third on Teagan's 'stupidest things eaten' list, after my razor (THANK goodness she knocked off the blade....my heart literally stopped for a moment) and a very expensive pair of glasses (to be fair, based on what i was able to piece together of them, she didn't swallow).
Randy, my luck, she'll keep the association with that guy but not the SOS pads....
It's so much easier for me to read her now, plus I think she goes into drive running, and refocuses better b/c of that, but she is doing good. I was very happy with her coming back to me mentally (edit: and physically, but the mentally I think is a bigger deal) at that moment.

Eating SOS pads? Come on, you're raising the level of discourse here
