Hi,
I gave my boxer beef ribs for the first time this morning, and while gnawing on the bone for more meat, he made a chip in the bone and swallowed it (the chip, not the bone).
is that typical of beef ribs bones to chip and should that be a concern?
thanks

I've never done beef ribs, but I've heard that some dogs can, and some dogs cannot, eat beef ribs.
It just depends on the type of chewer they are. I've heard more than one person say they stopped feeding beef ribs because of the chips and large chunks their dog tended to break off. I don't know if that's really a concern, but it stopped them.

thanks for the info Alyssa.
they liked it so much I will probably still give them, but keep an eye and take the bone away once the meat is gone.
I had the same concerned reaction when I saw the whole pork neck bone disappear...

I give my pup beef rib bones often. She usually ends up eating half the bone. She tends to be very careful what she swallows, even small bits of bone she will chew on and roll around her mouth a lot to the point they become soaked and therefore quite soft. Because of how she chews, I am not concerned with her eating the bone fragments. Nonetheless, I do not leave any bones for her to chew on if I am not around.

This should be the guide to what kind of bones you give your dog. The chewers that chew to destroy can really mess up their teeth, and many on this board have had huge problems with slab fractures. Others chew for fun, and can generally be safe with hard bones if supervised.

I can't give hard bones to any of my dogs, they chew to destroy and are all gulpers when it comes to food.

This is why I've never considered beef bones. Even the beef recreation bones we gave to Danke as a younger pup scared me as her chewing became more aggressive.
I could just picture her enamel being sanded off her teeth, and I kept cringing, waiting for the yelp of a cracked tooth.
I had to stop, for fear of ruining her mouth.

Indeed. If anyone is interested in knowing more about canine root canals, Oscar would be happy to describe his experience.
IMO, the key here is to just know your dog - pay attention to their chewing habits (which can change over time), remove large/brittle items when they're clean of meat, or just plain avoid the bones you know your dog will obliterate. Many dogs are plenty CAPABLE of chewing through and devouring pork, lamb and beef bones, but that doesn't mean they aren't doing damage to their teeth at the same time. I myself am shy now of feeding anything harder than chicken or rabbit bones.
