So, I'll try to keep this short. Its just started getting cold here (we had our first frost last night) and my Golden Retriever pup is shedding like crazy. We have wood floors through out our house and, no joke, I have to Swiffer and or vacuum the floors at least twice a day. I brush her everyday just to prevent matting but I'm looking at getting the FURminator. I watched Ed's demo video and it looks like a wonderful tool. Is there a better way to help keep the hair all over my house at bay or is it just a lost cause?
I third the notion. The furminator is one of two expensive yellow toys that I LOVE. The other is the dyson . I have heard the furminator is NOT for longer/thinner haired dogs (ie spaniels and goldens). My groomer told me not to use it on Kota who has a gsd/husky coat since it would ruin his top coat. I don't see it breaking, and since he essentially sheds year round I need it. I have used ALL her groomer tools, and none work half as well as the furminator. With a golden I would just use it very gently and slowly when there are no mats.
I don't know if golden's blow their coat but if so you take her to a groomer and have them blow her coat.
The Furminator works great on my shorter coated GSD and my rough coated JRT. My longer coated GSD's coat is way to thick and I still need to get out all the undercoat with a German rake before I can use the Furminator.
This past spring (he was one yr old) I damn near stripped out his tail with the Furminator by the time I got out all the undercoat.
+1 on the furminator, what are you feeding? diet can cause shedding issues also
Hana is fed a raw diet. I know its just shedding because she had a very healthy coat and skin.
I would try to vacuum her off but she hides everytime I bring the vacuum out. She has always been scared of it.
Another thing I use is the Kong zoom groom (Other companies make a similar product). It does a really nice job loosening up the hair and giving a massage, but does about 1/10 the job the furminator does.
Come to think of it, my old co-worker used it on her aussie as she said the furminator was too harsh on her dog.

zoom groom is a great tool for dogs that hate the bath and have dry skin. It transformed a couple of my dogs from the ew ew ew water dance to a kind of purring OMG this feels awesome.
I assume we're speaking of golden retrievers on this post. My favored tool is a long toothed coat rake for goldens at work. Furminator does a great job on a shorter coat but that long toothed coat rake pulls out just as many fur chunks and takes care of tangles all the way down to the skin.
The thing I like about the Furminator is that the extracted hair sticks in the Furminator and doesn't fly out all over the place like other shedding rakes I've used. Totally recommended.
