I adopted a retired French Ring II Belgium Malinois a few months ago. I noticed during football games on TV during the holidays that she would get excited when she heard a whistle. I wondered if that was because a whistle was a part of her previous competitions??
A horn is used, and handlers can use a whistle, if I remember correctly. I bet you could look up FR videos on Youtube and see which parts it's used in.

Actually it was used in prior training as well as trial. The Whistle can be used for 'recall' as well as voice in French Ring. There is advantages to using a whistle when trained properly literally means "Get your Butt to Heel RIGHT NOW!!" There is no mistake to what it means for the dog trained to respond and react to a whistle blast like that. Using a voice in competition in the heat of the moment handler or dog can mix things up but a whistle is consistently repeatable.

Love that dog's attitude in the recall. Looks like he's having fun.
