My GSD pup is approx. 6mos. old. He was outside in the yard for most of Friday. Come Saturday his stool is very loose with barely any solid to it. Come Sunday it's just liquid pouring out with stool texture accumulating in the grass. This morning he barfed up last nights dinner and was dry heaving a bit some clear mucus-y type stuff. I took him to the vet first thing this morning and they gave him a shot of reglan (antibiotic)and a couple of tablets Smz/tmp 480mg and Sucralfate Tab, both twice daily. Just now his stool is just about clear without any accumulation of stool texture in the grass.
Does anyone here have experience with this? Your insight or input is very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,Ray
edit: he has not eaten anything today, and I've not seen him
drink from his water bowl in the crate either.
He told me that they tested him for all the major puppy diseases or what not and they came up negative but he wasn't sure if he was able to get an adequate sample. Due to the lack of stool.
Do any of the symptoms sound familiar to anyone of anything in particular?
Yeah he is kinda down and out(the vet said the antibiotic may cause that) but take out his raquetball and he wakes up a bit and ready to play somewhat.
Yes they tested for Parvo, (must've been posting at the same time)but he was lacking in stool sample. What they did come up with they tested and it came out negative.
Just called the vet again and he said that he was able to get a good stool sample he was just a little concerned because he said those tests aren't always accurate.?.? He said that in the condition that he saw him in this morning (hydration-wise)he should be ok til t'morrow after the antibiotics kick in, since he wasn't vomiting anymore today.
I would go back and make sure the pup's small intestine hasn't retracted into his large intestine. It happens with GSDs and can be fatal f not caught in time. There is a medical term for that but I can't recall it (intercusstions or something like that).
There are specific test for parvo, coccidia, and giardia. A simple float/slide smear may miss the problem. I would test specifically for the mentioned problems. ASAP
Gatoraid, Pedialyte will help keep him hydrated. If you have to put it in a syringe (no needle) and get him to drink. There is a good article on this web-site about getting puppies hydrated. I would do something sooner than later.
