Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has attended this school, or worked with Mr. Jerone. I'm interested in becoming a trainer. I currently own a dog walking/pet sitting business in Pennsylvania and I wanted to also start training. Primarily I want to work with new dog owners and teach puppy classes. However I'm also interested in training service dogs for the disabled. I volunteer as a puppy raiser for a service dog group that trains dogs to become service dogs for the blind, deaf, or physically disabled.
I know from reading the forum that everyone highly recommends the Tom Rose, and the Triple Crown Academies, but it just is not feasible for me to attend either of those schools. They are both too far away and I couldn't leave my family for that long.
I'm looking for something closer to home that I would be able to at the very least commute to or come home on the weekends.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here is the link to Mr. Jerone's webpage. http://www.dogschoolny.com/
Thank you,
Deb

This man is a crook - there are a lot of these kinds of people in the so called dog school business. This guy goes to the top of the list. He is a drunk - drinks in the middle of his so called classes. He is a scam artist that takes peoples money with nothng nto officer.
We stopped doing business with him in 2008. We know he has taken or copyrighted material and sold copies in his class. We are considering a law suit over this.
So please tell anyone who even thinks about Anthony Jerone or his dogschoolny.com or the Anthony Jerone Dog School to turn around and run.

I am not familiar with this person or his training program, other than spending a few minutes perusing his site.
It appears that he uses an old school style of training, as opposed to positive motivational techniques such as marker training.
He says his graduates are Certified Master Trainers. Oh my.

I'll probably open up a huge can of worms with this but...
as a general rule, the military uses a lot of compulsion in their training. If his experience is based largely on the Army's method of MWD training, then I'd be very leery of his training style.
With that said, I appreciate his attitude with respect to corrections.
A dog does not understand right from wrong as humans do. Reward and correction are the
means by which a dog is taught. If the dog does an exercise incorrectly, do not allow it to go
uncorrected. Withholding praise, or the simple admonition,"NO!", spoken reprovingly, or a
sharp jerk on the leash, proves to be sufficient for correction purposes.
TIMING is probably the most important factor in administering any form of correction.
Therefore, a reprimand, in whatever form, should be administered immediately when the
incorrect act is performed. A dog cannot mentally connect a reprimand with an incorrect action
committed some time before the reprimand.
NEVER correct a dog for clumsiness, slowness in learning, or inability to understand what is
expected of it. In these cases, correction slows down the dog's training instead of accelerating
it.
Observation, patience, self-control and discretion are essential in correction. If the dog makes
a mistake, the handler may be at fault, and the handler should think for a second about why
the mistake was made. Proper correction indicates proper thinking.
It always makes me stop and think when I see a retiree or veteran place so much emphasis on their military service, to the extent of using his Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) as "credentials".
Well hell, I've got two ARCOMs and an Meritorious Service Medal, can I be a Master Dog Trainer too?
All in all, a person would probably have to see his training in person to judge the quality.

Hi Deborah,
How are you, I see you may be interested in my school. Have no fear, we are now licensed by the Board of Education, which means we are an around about school. The people who respond to your questions have no idea what we teach. You should give me a call or i can mail you a state certified board of education approval of my curriculum. Good luck in your career. http://www.dogschoolny.com
