Hi everyone, got another one for you. I have been trying to talk my other half into letting Kane come in the house when its raining. Let me tell you its quite a battle  . He doesnt want a big dog running around the house.
My question is how can I get Kane to go to his crate in the house and stay there? His crate is outside right now and he knows when I say "inside" its time to eat and goes right in. Door open the whole time. He also sleeps in it during the day usually but with the past two days of rain is getting wet. Now if I can get Kane to "Go to his place" (the crate) in the house then my boyfriend is fine with that. I dont want to have to lock him in there but Im not sure of the correct approach to get him to understand he has to stay in there. He does undersatnd when I want him to go in there but say if I tell him "inside" and give him a treat instead of food... he will come right back out. I have not introduced a "stay" comand since I heard there was really no need for it. And Im working on his longer downs, and sits. But still doesnt down for too long and Im usually standing there with his toy or treat. Kane is 9 months old now if that helps. Also do I say "inside" in the house or do I use a "go to your place" comand? Should I use both and wean out the "inside?"
LOL easier said than done. He pays the bills and two children and 10 years later. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
So getting rid of him isnt an opption. I know others have taught their dogs that they have a place in the house and they have to go to it when told. Anyone else have any advice? I know your out there!
If you send him to his crate, he doesn't need a stay command. Just shut the door. He may raise hell at first but you'll need to ignore that. Still feed him in the crate. Until he's used to staying in there quietly, in the house, don't let him run free.
I have a Tri-tronics video that teaches the "place" command. Basically you lead your dog to the "place" you want him to be, reward him for being there with food or whatever. If he moves from his "place" he get's stimmed with the collar until he moves back. You may not have an e-collar but the principle is the same. I would put him on a leash, lead him to the place you want him to stay, praise him for staying there, then wait for him to bolt. As soon as he moves from the designated "place", immediately correct him with the leash, take him back to the "place" and move off. If he stays return to him and reward him for staying put. You have a young dog so be patient. You will have to work on this, he isn't likely to pick it up in one session. Also, dont' over do it. Keep the session short and the reward high when he is displaying the behavior you want. Give him a command like "Relax" and teach him that you like it when he is calm and remains where you told him to stay. JMO.
