I like to set up social scenarios where your pup can dominate, intimidate, and push people around. It takes people who are good actors and understand body language. . .and who don't mind rolling on the ground like whimps.
Call me crazy, and I'm sure half the dog trainer's on this board do, but I think it builds confidence in greeting new strangers and futher interactions with people.
Most pups are submissive by nature and most people just reinforce the behavior in their normal interactions with a puppy. (staring at them cuz their cute, rubbing their heads, leaning over them, letting them lick their faces, pushing them around a little, picking them up, etc, etc, etc.
Let the pup greet people who will act submissive and really play it up for once. If the pup has some inclings of dominance and confidence, they'll take advantage of it and enjoy it. Sets up the correct expectations for later protecion work.
Ha! VanCamp that's great! I thought I was the only person who would roll and wriggle and act submissive for friend's little guys. And yeah, I love to see the previously submissive pup light up and puff out his chest <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I'd add to that I don't like taking pups to places like PetSmart et al until they have confidence. The squealing vulture-lady always swoops down on pups from somewhere while you're checking out the pig ears.
'Course it's fun to see the look on her face when you tell her "NO" in the best trainer style.
Why the hell do people think they should be able to feel up my dog anyway? I don't grope their wives.
This is a great topic. Puppies need to have their confidence reinforced constantly so that when they are working you have fewer issues to work though. It's amazing how many trainers and handlers who work their pups with a rag or a tug don't show enough submission and weakness in their posture/body language to build up the pup. Of course, the people who are good at it just make it look easy!
