Just got back from biking in woods with my dog. I decided to take a new trail, and heading back got a bit mixed up & could not locate my trail out!! My dog wanted to take a trail which I thought was incorrect, so I urged her to follow me, which of course she did. After about 20min of back and forth I headed back and decided to follow my girl.....you guessed it! Her instincts were correct and she got me back on track! Of course, she knows that a peanut butter filled kong awaits her return..(its not on the recall list)
I always ride with my cell phone, mace and a collapsable baton..do I now need to mount my GPS on the bike? ugh!
I just found it amazing that her homing instincts were right on compared to mine!

My bf took my dog for a walk once and go lost b/c he didn't go the way I told him to go (I knew he'd get lost if he didn't...). He was too afraid of my laughing at him to call me and tell me he didn't listen to me and was consequently lost, so he said, desperately, "Caleb...seek HOME." And home he went. LOL!
Upon coming back, he was so impressed by the dog's performance that he had to tell me he was lost just so he could tell the story.

I am always impressed that my dog can find our way home. He does however get me lost going up the trail all the time!! He jumps over a log instead of heading up the switchback, and I follow. Haha, there's often a lot of backtracking. I usually prefer to take my gps and mark the car/trailhead anyway just in case, but Kota always leads me home safely

Well, I don't want to make my dog sound like some superhero; he knows the word "seek" and I always tell him when we're going home, so putting the two words together is not rocket science. He was probably just tired of hanging out with that idiot! LOL!

What amazes me constantly is that my dog knows where every obstacle is on every trail we've hiked, as long as we've done the trail at least once.
We use all the things you find in the woods on trails, downed logs, rocks, boulders, etc. She knows she's not allowed to do any obstacle without permission (agility training).
So, we'll be hiking along, and she'll look to me in anticipation and asking as we approach any one of these natural obstacles, and I'll tell her "go hup" or whatever the action is for that particular obstacle.
It's really amazing when we hike a trail we've not been on for a long time, and she remembers where all these things are (way better than I do).

When my tibia was fractured last summer, my brother and mom took Luc hiking with a friend. They did an out-and-back, and on the way back, Luc and my brother went ahead. It was raining, my brother had his hood up, and didn't see the turnoff to the car. He kept going, so Luc went with him. After about 7k, my brother realized they had missed the turning, and went back. When they got there, Luc of course followed the turnoff that led to the car.
B/c I'd just changed my number and only the friend had her phone with her, they weren't able to call me. By the time they got home, I was freaking out (waiting outside on the steps), and all I could say was 'WHERE'S MY DOG??????'....all were fine though, and Luc came through
