I just purchased Ubo vom Johnson-Haus out of Zeno de Renaudloup. I pick him up this Friday and I cannot wait!!! I'm so excited!!!
I've owned GSDs for 5 years now and I'm very involved in obedience with my current male as well as in agility and herding.
I want to do obedience and agility competition with Ubo, as well as tracking, flyball and what ever else comes our way, probably even Schutzhund.
The reason I'm posting is, this is my first TRUE working dog and I want to do EVERYTHING right. I want this dog to be the BEST. So please, if you have advices or things you wish you had known when you got your 1st working GSD but didn't, things I should do or things I shouldn't do, please post away and thank you for your time.
Be ready to keep him very busy. Krieger is my first dog out of working lines- I was rorally unprepared for the difference. Also if you think you want to do Schutzhund you may want to check out Ed's puppy video.
Good thought Brigita! Peroxide doesn't sting and she'll need lots of it. I was gonna suggest a small, portable step ladder for her to climb when she can't keep it busy as Pam sugested, but mine was climbing ladders at 16wks.
Home of SAR dog:
Erk Vom Powell-Haus CGC, 3 year old male GSD
Bayani vom Wildhaus, 10 month old female,co-owned with her breeder
At the bridge, Ax CGC, male dalmatian http://www.geocities.com/lugnut514532000/index.html
I know your excitement as I have only had Luke (my first working dog, a Mal) for a few months...so far it has been great!!!!
He is very smart - in fact, he is teaching me a lot!!
Somedays get a little intimidating because I am so scared I am going to do something "wrong" and everyone has different advice (almost like when you have a human baby) -- sooooo for now we are doing the best we can and learning one day at a time...I have read the advice on this board a lot and the breeder I got him from is working with me...he is like no other dog I have ever owned!!!
I'm sure it will be very exciting for you!!!
Oh, yea...if he's anything like my guy - he'll be an excellent exercise plan!!!
Get the crate..but have an area planned that he can be a pup...and investigate..and tear up lol. A huge rope works well (3 inch in diameter x 10 ft long) for a toy lol.Get some cow hooves..and scatter them.He will keep himself busy. Candace
