Hello All,
This is my first posting so please excuse me if this subject has already been discussed. I have decided to put my dogs on an all natural diet. I purchase the book " Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats". Years ago, I used to feed my Shutzhund 1 German Shepherd tripe and dirty tripe on occasion. Can I feed my dogs tripe and if yes, what kind of ratio?
I would be most appreciative for any help.
Cheers,
Alan

Keep it simple. Think of a grass-eating animal and the proportion of muscle, bone, and organ in its body...and try to roughly recreate that over the course of, say, a week or two. So easy. Thinking of a whole rabbit, I'd say its digestive tract is maybe, roughly, close to 20% by volume? Something like that.
Oh, and salmon oil/vitamin e!
Ditch the white tripe, though. Pretty useless.

I have found that Solid Gold sells green tripe in the can. My dogs love it and I like that it's in a can and the smell is contained until I'm ready to use it.

I have wondered if the tripe in the can is as good as tripe from the meat dept? Aslo, I have not been sure about which tripe to buy at the store, some looks like long intestines (which is what I have bought, other looks kind of like a roast shape, and then there is the solid white stuff. I know they say green tripe, but, not sure which is which, the pkg doesn't say.

The solid white stuff is cleaned and doesn't have as much nutrition as the green tripe.
I had to buy green tripe and at a Mexican food market

Is the tripe you are looking at from the grocery store meat department?
If so, none of it is what you want. It has been bleached or scalded. No good for the dogs.
Green tripe cannot be sold anywhere near food for human consumption. You will have to get it from a pet food supplier or from a slaughterhouse that will let you get it out of the gut barrel.

Thanks for the information. I have been getting mine from the grocery store, so I guess the canned tripe would be better that what I have been getting for them.
That's what I like about this site, you learn from other peoples' questions.

Green tripe isn't always green. Sometimes greenish, sometimes brownish, sometimes greyish, sometimes greenish/brownish/greyish.....definitely NEVER WHITE.
This is a great site, huh?
