I just gave my almost six month old GSD a beef rib bone - raw. It was about 3 1/2 - 4" long and mayber 1" wide. He chewed on it for a few minutes and then turned it length wise and swallowed the whole *%$# bone!! I did a search on this site and saw older posts about swallowing chicken bones not being a big deal, but do I need to worry about this??
Also, Falcon gets three meals a day at this point...is it okay to go ahead and feed him his lunch?
Many thanks - I'm worried sick about this so any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, it will come out. Now that you have a better understanding what kind of chewer he is, perhaps beef bones of that size are not the most suitable for him.
Thanks guys... I called the vet who said he could certainly digest it and might be fine, but there was of course the chance of a problem developing and suggested I induce vomiting.
1 ounce of peroxide and a small amount of food did the trick; the bone is now back in my possession!!! LOL!
Induce vomiting ... that is interesting, but probably not something I would have done. Having the bone, undigested, come right back up may be just as dangerous (in terms of getting caught, etc.) as it was going down.
In times of a medical situation, it made sense to me to trust the vet. I had the same thought myself, but figured all those years of medical school and experience surely trumped my lack of experience! :-) I was VERY glad to see the bone come out in the same direction it went in!!
I agree, I have researched this subject quite abit and it seems vets are split on inducing vomiting or not. I have came to the conclusion that I think it is safer to take the chance on them pooping it out.
