hi folks,
I'm currently using an organ meat mix to do the 5-10% of organ meat that my dogs diet includes.
the mix comes from a butcher, and is composed of the following: It is a blend of the Beef heart, liver, kidney, lung-trachea, tongue, spleen, and cheek meat all ground and mixed together.
Besides not controlling the amount of each part in the mix (for example I see the liver and kidneys referenced more often than cheek or tongue), is there something wrong with that approach?
I also have a choice of another mix:
20 pounds real beef trim, not the dry outer layer.
30 pounds lung & trachea
15 pounds tripe gullet
25 pounds clean tripe
5 pounds kidney
5 pounds liver
which gives a better indication of what percentage each part is in (roughly that is).
Any way he could give you a rough idea about how much of what was in there?
Organs are a very important, but small part of the whole diet. The mix you are using is probably adequate. It would still be nice to have a rough idea, though.
Thought a little reasoning to my post might be nice.
The %'s we go by are only guidelines. I'd venture to guess that a lot of raw feeders overuse liver and rarely give other organs. Some, like brains and eyeballs, are never or are very rarely fed throughout the animals lifetime.
The only suggestion that I'd have for the way you are using the blend is to not measure. You know roughly what that 5-10% looks like. By not measuring, somedays they'll get more and somedays less. I think that way you'd have less of a chance of over or under doing something.

Thanks Michael. Eyeballing the amount of the mix i put in the bowl is fine, it is the amount of each part in the mix i'm worrying about (information which is not available to me). An extreme example would be that the mix is 95% cheeks, and 5% for liver, heart, etc...
That would mean that even though im feeding the right amount (like in weight) of organs, i may be feeding the wrong ones...
I will probably switch to the second mix where i can see what's in it and toss a few chunks of liver and kidney as you recommend.
I'm sorry. I wasn't even thinking of the other mixes. Talk about hiding in plain sight. That makes even better sense.
While you are getting the liver and kidney separate, could you get some of the spleen, too? At least that would be one organ closer to the real deal. Then you could have a really nice blend that you had complete control over.
Wish I could've helped more. I think you helped yourself more.
