Hi All, I am looking for some ideas or experience that can help me figure out how to contain two German Shepherd dogs in my Subaru Outback.
It was easy enough with one dog/one crate, and by the time I got the the female I found a little bit of a narrower crate which workes well for this slimmer baby, and "tank boy" was so well behaved that he had his own solid carpet next to her crate - it worked quite well.
Now that Mr. well behaved is no longer with us, and I am looking for another GSD boy I am wondering if anyone has experiences with some alternate containment for two large dogs in the back of a vehicle that does not hold two dog crates? Look forward to hearing your ideas, thank you!
Could be a new topic for Ed to write about!
A friend puts her seats down and sticks two large kennels in there. But there's no use of the middle seats, it's a two-seater dog mobile now. Those dividers that cover the back hatch area are not very safe as they have been shown to pop out during accidents causing more harm.
I find this situation to be frustrating. Subaru needs to make crates . I have a forester and want a crate to fit in the back so the pully privacy sheet thing (must be a name for this device) can still close to keep the sun out when my boy's not in there. So far I have tried the collapsible kennels which I do not think are very comfortable or safe.
I also remember someone posting a link to a site where they custom make a kennel for you.
Super Pet had a crate designed to fit in the back of minivans and SUV's. It came in all sizes and some models had a divider in the middle for two dogs. I can't even find a picture of what it looked like but it was like a plastic vari-kennel with one side angled down (where the back window of the vehicle would be).
Thank you everyone for your fast responses.
Jennifer, I revisted the Subaru site, nothing..as you already know.
back car seats are down all the time just to fit the one crate in for now, problem was that my large male would not fit into a 21" wide crate. Looks the custom sites are the ones I need to contact after I measure my car again. I like the very solid one, but that maybe hard to move around and I need flexibilty (groceries, skis, saddles...). I am hoping the midwest folks can help me. After I figure this out, I will let you know what I found out!
Considering dog sizes I wonder if it is reasonable to find a solution that contains both dogs - i.e. a containment that reaches the maximum space. Any issues anyone can think of with keeping 2 dogs that live together in one large area?
I found a wire-style double crate online when I was searching. Very reasonable priced.
There are many 'custom' companies that can build to your exact specifications, but they are expensive. I managed to find a shaped, collapsable double crate for £90 ($130 US).
It both dogs fit easily with enough room to lie down. (Female Doberman and adolescent male Rott).
If you do go for a crate option, make sure it has a rear exit too - just in case you have a rear-end shunt and can't open the trunk.
The problem with most smaller SUV's is the protrusion of the tires into the cabin space - I really don't want to purchase a mini van...rather pay for custom crates, this statement is made however prior to obtaining pricing
I guess I could also let the dogs "guard" the groceries inside the crates.... now they would LOVE that... Actually, I do use it now for transporting wine bottles or other more delicate items - obviously when I travel without dogs.
Rob I really like the double type crates from your link, no harm in learning shipping costs from the UK either. These are as reasonable as I have seen.
Appreciate these great suggestions - maybe crate manufacturer is willing to toss in a ski rack...
Subaru has more more parts available in Japan. They might make a dog divider but that will be about the extent of it. They have one of these specially made for my car but they don't sell it here in the States.....it can be purchased via Japan if I wanted it. I am in the same situation and I'm going the custom crate route when I have the finances for it.
