My 10 week olk GS puppy has started to whine when I take him for a walk. For the first week he was fine with it and the last few times he has been crying and not wanting to walk. Once we turn around and head back home he can't wait to get there, he is pulling me on the leash. Just wondering if this is normal and should I just wait until he is ready and willing to go or keep at it. Nothing has happened to frighten him on any of the walks, in fact he seemed to love it up until the last few times. Just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen with their puppy. Thanks for your help.
Andrew, if he learns that whining and crying gets him out of things you will be VERY sorry that you taught him that.
Did this pup come from a pet store?
He needs to learn that you are his source of safety not his house.
The key is positive reinforcement and setting up scenarios where you will succeed and he won't cry. If he has a favorite toy or activity, try using that as a carrot to get him on walks. At 10 weeks I would not punish him for the behavior, but I would make darn sure that I did not reinforce the behavior either.
Thanks for the replies. He came from a breeder not a pet store. When he started crying I didn't end the walk, so I am glad for that. I will bring some treats along next time and keep the walks short.
He went to the vet last week and they said he was in excellent condition. I go back in a couple weeks so if it keeps up I will mention it to the vet. Thanks again.
In Ed’s video “Bite Training Puppies,” there was a puppy that was whining on the rag or something like that. And if I recall correctly Ed mentioned that this puppy ended up to be quite vocal on the sleeve. The dog’s nerves were turned on and it was a way (whining) the dog could deal with the stress. I wouldn’t walk him so much, to avoid the stress in the first place. Treats and positive motivation should work, but I would let him get used to the concept of being on the leash at first.
John, I was just trying to point out that whining is a sign of stress that the pup doesn’t need. As you recommended that short walks would do. It just seems that the pup is not comfortable in strange areas yet. Him pulling all the way home may be a flight response i.e. pulling away from stress. And would be bad if that response is reinforced. We don’t Andrews dog to end up with a negative association with the walk or leash is all.
My puppy did the exact same thing when I took her out for walks. They were short walks but still she cried. I'm thinking that your dog is doing the same thing as mine only because it is out of an environment that it knows as safe. Over time your dog, like mine will stop and view your walks as more enjoyable and something to look forward to as it grows older. Now my pup can't wait to go out for walks and yours will too as long as it is a positive experience.
